Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Briefing Room]

She should have known he would make that offer - to let her look into his memory to see it for herself. But it wasn't that she didn't believe him. It was the level of conviction she wanted to be reassured about. And his answer was doing just that.

When he posed his request, Tess looked at him across the room. In comparison to her, he had remained standing - of course. She wondered if a 'memory' like this was even valid as 'proof'. Would Rayek's discovery even mean anything in an official trial?
She thought about his reuqest for a moment longer, then nodded. "Very well, yes, let's revoke all of his access to any devices and turn off the replicator." She then frowned and picked up her PADD to check Rojol's file. "There is no reference at all that he has been in the Tal'Shiar. We'll need to contact Starfleet Intelligence to check this. And I would like a talk with Lared as well." She was aware that all of this likely was slowing things down in Rayek's opinion, but she didn't want to jump the gun on this now. She sought Rayek's eyes. "I would also like to speak to Mr tr'Hei."

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck One - Briefing Room]

Tess seemed very pensive immediately after his recommendation.  He met her gaze as she looked across the room at him.  For a moment, he was concerned that she might deny his request.   Rayek knew this must be hard on her.  Betrayal was not something Starfleet groomed their officers to expect.

He started to close the distance between then, to offer some level of support.  As he reached her side, Tess seemed to have come to accept his precaution.

Rayek smiled slightly in amusement at her remark about Rojol's file.   "It hardly seems likely that they would use a known operative.  Assassinations are done off book and with complete deniability.  But yes, I will arrange contact with the most senior Intelligence officer in the Gamma Quadrant."

With a task assigned to him, Rayek's mind immediately began working out the logistics.  "Lared was quite exhausted after my study of his memories, so I would recommend speaking with tr'Hei first.  In the meantime, I will reach out to the Starfleet Intelligence office on New Bajor, and get Engineering to pull those computers from Rojol's room."

He laid a hand lightly upon her shoulder and gave it a slight squeeze in support.  "We've found the culprit.  One less thing you need to worry about."

Or at least that was his hope.  As he pulled his PADD to start on his own 'To Do' list, Rayek recalled that he'd seen tr'Hei just prior to coming here.

"If you can't get a hold of tr'Hei at the ambassador's office.."  His office. "You might check Sickbay.  He was headed there just as I was leaving."

The thought of the aide coming down with some minor illness was somehow appealing to Rayek.  He didn't know why, but the man for all his pleasantness grated on the Romulan's nerves.

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Briefing Room]

Tess looked up at him when he rested a hand on her shoulder, reassuring her that they had caught the culprit. She gave him a small smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. There was just this one little bit of uncertainty left, other than Rayek who seemed to be completely sure. "I hope so."

At the information that the Romulan aide was seen in sickbay, Tess nodded in acknowledgement. "That comes in handy. I planned to speak to Roberto anyways regarding Lared, so I can ask him if tr'Hei is still in sickbay as well." She picked up her PADD and rose from the seat before she took a step or two towards Rayek. "When shall we meet?" She glanced at the chronometer. "In an hour or two?"

Cmdr. Rayek trLhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck One - Briefing Room]

That the smile she gave him was only half-hearted was noticed, but Rayek didn't force the issue further.  She would do what she needed in order to be comfortable with her decision - he trusted that.

When Tess spoke of having planned to speak to Dr. Padrini regarding Lared, Rayek stifled a grimace.  In his report during the meeting, he hadn't mentioned Padrini's recommending against the meld.  Rayek figured he should probably mention that now to prepare Tess for the criticizing words the doctor no doubt had about him and his action.

Rayek nodded at her suggestion of meeting in an hour or two when she had time.  "Yes, of course, I'll be on the Bridge until then.  Oh, I should mention in forewarning that Dr. Padrini was present when I arrived to meet with Lared.   He officially advised against Lared participating in the meld - however I made certain that I wasn't going against his medical orders prior to proceeding with the meld."

After delivering that bit of irksome news, Rayek closed the gap between them wrapping his arms about her lovingly, having taken her approach nearer as an indication that they might steal a moment of personal time before continuing their duties.

"Your strength throughout all this has been inspiring, e'lev..." It was so true.  Tess had held the ship together even while he'd been unconscious and mending in Sickbay.  She'd managed admirably all on her own.

She shouldn't have had to though.

"I regret that my presence has brought this unpleasantness to the ship.   But it's almost over," he reassured again as he held her close to him for what seemed far to short a moment... but they had things to do.

When they stepped apart, he inclined his head towards her indicating that she should lead the way out. "I will await your call to meet.  We can do lunch in the Arboretum perhaps...?" he added with a slight salacious smile, but doubted that, as Captain, that Tess would agree to his risque suggestion.  But he could hope.

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Briefing Room]

Tess regarded Rayek for a moment when he told her - kinda reluctantly - that Roberto had not approved of the mind meld. She could imagine how much of a tense situation that had been. It was good that Rayek won through, Roberto could have had the leverage to deny even her Captain's orders over the medical well-being of the patient. She was glad it had turned out okay in the end. She would need to make sure to thank Lared personally for his contribution and willingness to comply.

"Thank you for the warning", she replied with a little amused grin on her face.

When Rayek walked over to her to embrace her in a hug, Tess didn't hesitate to melt into it. It was something she had needed and for a moment it felt like all of the pressure was taken from her as she rested her head against Rayek's chest. "I hope it is", she said quietly when he said he hoped it was almost over. The past weeks had been really draining.
They stayed for a moment like this and when they were about to step away from each other Tess leaned over to steal a kiss from her husband before she let go of him.

His suggestion of having lunch in the arboretum was met with a smile. "That sounds lovely."

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - s'Lhoell quarters] (later that day - evening)

Her talk with Roberto had been good. Lared seemed to have taken the mentally exhausting process of the mind meld well, as he had started to recover already by the time she had left the sickbay. The lunch with Rayek in the arboretum had been lovely and it was an opportunity for Tess to relax and just have a good time. They even brought Fvienn and it was just so relaxing.

Now they were in their quarters and just had dinner. Tess enjoyed the time with Rayek and Fvienn. The mother was just wiping Fvienn's little mouth clean from the mushed food he'd had. As she did that she made a game out of it as Fvienn started to try and grab the cloth from her and Tess let him grab the corner of it before tugging it out of his grasp again which caused a brief giggle from the infant as he looked up at her with smiling eyes. In turn, Tess couldn't help but laugh as well.

"Dinner was delicious, ciccino. Thank you", she said to Rayek who had become an even more excellent cook.

NPC Ambassadorial Aide Rhienn tr'Hei (disguise of Telmuk tr'Lhoell, Tal'Shiar operative)
[USS Amalthea - Deck 8 - Sickbay

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck 8 - Sickbay]

Just as he was about to exit Sickbay, the doors opening for him as he made to stride out,  Rayek nearly bumped into Aide tr'Hei.  The portly figure looked momentarily alarmed to see that it was Rayek he had collided with.   Rayek noted that the man's hand moved to his belt... where a Romulan disruptor might have been located had weapons not been banned from the visiting Ambassadorial staff.  After the initial shock the hand dropped and the aide made a point of bowing obsequiously.

"Commander, my apologies at my inattentiveness.  I hope all is well with you and yours." the man all but fawned in an obvious attempt to make up for the incident.

"Yes.  All is well.  Just visiting Ensign tr'Movel. Now if you'll excuse me I have somewhere urgent to be." Rayek stated as he began to step around the other who remained blocking the doorway.

For a moment, as Rayek passed in close proximity to the aide, Rayek felt a strong sense of familarity and he turned his head to glance back at the man.   tr'Hei remaining the doorway offering another slight apologetic bow.

Telmuk watched Rayek carefully.  Had his brother noticed his hand reaching for where he might normally have worn a disruptor? If he did, Rayek said nothing about it... though he did glance back towards him even after stating 'there was somewhere urgent he had to be'.  It was so very tempting to Telmuk to try reading his brother.  But if he were careless in doing so, it would be noticed and then his cover would be blown.

It was concerning that he had run into Rayek here.   Telmuk knew Rayek had been seeking permission to gain access to the tr'Movel's memories.  Fvadt! He needed to know if that happened; and if so, what had he found out?

The Romulan 'aide' was met in the main treatment area of the Sickbay by a nurse who greeted him assessingly, while asking if she could help him with anything.

Telmuk introduced himself as Rhienn tr'Hei, Romulan Ambassadorial aide - in the hopes that the title might impress and give him more leverage to speak to the recent awoken patient.  "I'm here just to check up on how Lared tr'Movel is?  Would it be possible to see him briefly?"

The nurse checked her PADD a moment and from her expression, Lared could tell the answer was going to be no.  That was okay.  With his training, Telmuk didn't need to be in the same room as his target thought it certainly made things easier.

While the nurse began her explanation with how currently the attending doctor was in with him and that visitors were limited to immediate family for the time being, Telmuk cast out his mind searching for the one he needed to search.  He first encountered the nurse's - skipped over that one, then located what he assumed was the doctor's - though he was quite surprised by the level distrust and hatred for his brother he read in even just a surface read.  Padrini.  Telmuk made note of the name.  The man could be useful in the future.

The next mind he encountered was tr'Movel's.   The man's mind was while not closed off or shielded was...  hyper-aware of intrusion - from having just gone through an intense mental ordeal.  It was likely that the man was able to pick up on even this light level of surface read.  Thankfully, the information he needed was right there in the forefront of the man's mind..  the fact that the shuttle had been remote accessed and that the culprit for doing so used a certain authorization code.   While tr'Movel didn't recognize the code, Telmuk did.  It was the authorization code he'd pilfered from the Romulan flight office that had toured him.

Thought it didn't implicate him directly, it brought the investigation one step closer to discovering him.  This worried Telmuk greatly.   Fvadt!   He frowned and withdrew from the other Romulan's mind just as the other man began to question why he was feeling that same intrusive sensation in his mind.   Telmuk grimaced at the headache that doing a distant reading gave him.

Nodding in acknowledgement to the nurse's apologetic words, Telmuk left Sickbay feeling slightly panicked.   It was time to move forward on 'Plan B' - despite his wavering on whether his brother deserved to die... his orders from Vandar were clear, and Telmuk knew all too well the consequences if he failed.   He would be the next that an operative would be sent to eliminate.

NPC Ensign Lared tr'Movel
[USS Amalthea - Deck 8 - Sickbay]

After Rayek left there was a moment where Lared was left exhausted from the ordeal.   He looked to the doctor that had recommended against the meld and now understood why.   In part, he kind of wished he'd listened to the doctor's sage advice - but then Rayek seemed to have found what was needed.   The person responsible was going to face justice..  so maybe it had been worth it.

"I know, I disregarded your warning... and I half wish I hadn't... but thank you, for staying and overseeing his... search...  It helped reassure me."

His thankful mindset reminded him that he hadn't expressed his appreciation to the medical staff.  "Also, thank you and the rest of the medical staff, for not giving up on me.   Any Romulan physician would have done so weeks ago." he commented.

He let the doctor do his medical scans wondering once more about the doctor's disapproval of the telepathy.  It had been terrible but the information had been retrieved so in all Lared supposed it had been worth it.  "There's no neurological side-effects, is there?" he questioned as the doctor silently studied his medical tricorder.

It was then suddenly Lared felt that same intrusive feeling in his mind.  He shook his head in an attempt to dislodge it.  "Ugh... I hope this feeling doesn't linger."

NPC Arrain (Centurion) Taheen t'Raghaellh
[USS Amalthea - Deck 6 - XO's office as temporary ambassadorial office]

Taheen sat across the desk from Rhienn in the Ambassorial Aide's office.  She and tr'Hei had been talking on and off for a couple weeks now regarding Romulan law in regards to broken wedding engagements.  As the 'injured' party, Taheen had several options open to her - forced annulment of Rayek's current marriage, monetary or other recompense by the offender, even ritual combat which was a legacy law from ancient times.  It was this last one that Rhienn was suggesting to be the best option for her.

Taheen rubbed at her temples trying to rid herself of the pressure there.  These talks were becoming more and more stressful.  "But how is that going to make anything right at all?" she questioned.

She could see Rhienn frowning at her with a serious and concentrating look.  "Does it not make your blood boil that he has insulted you in this manner?  You were promised to one another - not in childhood, but as comprehending adults.   Yet he has treated that promise like ryakna.  He married another - a foreigner and given her the child that should have been yours - a child that would have helped rebuild our people."

For reasons she couldn't explain, tr'Hei's words were very convincing and soon Taheen found herself agreeing vehemently that she didn't want recompense; she didn't want the second-hand affections of a two-timing traitor.  She wanted justice for his broken promise, and his infidelity!  "I want blood in payment!"

tr'Hei nodded having recorded her statement. "Of course, that is understandable.  This is what the ancient laws state you need to do..."

Commander Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Briefing Room > Bridge and elsewhere]

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Briefing Room]

Tess regarded Rayek for a moment when he told her - kinda reluctantly - that Roberto had not approved of the mind meld. She could imagine how much of a tense situation that had been. It was good that Rayek won through, Roberto could have had the leverage to deny even her Captain's orders over the medical well-being of the patient. She was glad it had turned out okay in the end. She would need to make sure to thank Lared personally for his contribution and willingness to comply.

Tess' stolen kiss was so endearing that Rayek for the next several minutes after they parted ways, was constantly smiling in remembrance - though he had pointedly checked for lipstick upon his own lips before stepping out onto the Bridge while she went to the Medical bay.  On the Bridge, first thing Rayek did was contact both Security and Engineering to have all computer access to Ensign Takima's remove revoked and even the replicator removed.  He would have suggested even the removal of the recycler in the toilet but knew that to be a 'Human Rights' issue from past arguments on the subject back when he'd only been a crewman on the USS Challenger.

After that, the First Officer caught himself up on the Department Head updates he'd missed while in Sickbay with Lared.  Nothing stood out as alarming.  He specifically checked on Benjin's attendance that morning.

This reminded him of another task he needed to see to.  He had Science scan for any M-class planets on their route and was pleased to have one reported as uninhabited just a few hours away.   He put in a request to the Captain for a detour to the planet in order to beam aboard a load of soil for Rah'ul's garden.  Alternatively, they could use the replicators to create the soil but that would put a dint in their limited supply of base replicator material.  Tess would no doubt recognize this and understand the reason for the detour to the nearby planet.

As break time neared,  Rayek recalled his promise to his son to spend time with him, so had to adjust his romantic plans for something more family-oriented.  At over nine months, it wouldn't be long before his son would be mimicking the sounds around him and starting to talk;  Rayek didn't think his wife would be approving of his son picking up on his calling her 'his little lust-devil' rather than 'Mommy' or the much less suggestive endearment 'e'lev'.

The family picnic in the Arboretum, while not his original idea, was perfect.  Rayek, for the first time in weeks, was able to relax a bit, knowing that they'd caught the saboteur and that his family was once more safe in his presence.

The afternoon brought more of the same ship routine that Rayek was proficient at.  There was still no sign of nor contact with any astrocetus but the ship's operations department kept up a steady signal and search.  He priority reassigned an engineering team from the investigation of the shuttle - which to his mind was now considered as solved - to emptying out the personnel quarters and building the hobby garden area.

Later in the afternoon, after having detoured to the class-M planet to pick up a load of soil and having the transporter filter out any foreign bacteria and organisms, Rayek called on Benjin who was due to get off shift within the hour to direct him to the cargo bay area where the soil had been deposited and instructed him on where to bring the dirt.  The shovel and wheelbarrow were already replicated and waiting for the cadet in the cargo overtop of the pile of dirt.

As evening came about, after a wonderful meal of a new recipe he'd found called pancit bihon, Rayek settled mentally to a relaxing evening with his family.  He smiled at Fvienn and Tess'  amusing antics as he cleared away the last of the dinner dishes.   "I'm glad you liked it.  I'll note the recipe as something to make again," he responded to her compliment.

With the kitchen clean, Rayek went over to the ferret habitat and opened the cage to allow Thrafv, their Cardassian ferret, out for some exercise.   While he had been cautious at first with allowing Thrafv near Fvienn, over the past several months the two had grown close and while Fvienn still had yet to learn to be gentle, the ferret had learned that aggressive displays were not tolerated and instead adapted to evading the infant's grasping reach or tolerating it until either parent could loosen Fvienn's hold.  Yet in those times when Fvienn fell asleep in either Rayek's or Tess' arms on the couch, the ferret would curl up beside the infant almost protectively.  Rayek highly approved of this protective instinct.

He had just spread out a blanket on the floor for the family to lay out together for some playtime when a chime sounded at their quarter's door.  Rayek glanced over to Tess curiously.  "Were you expecting anyone?" he asked curiously.

He knew this evening Tamo'nar, and Rah'ul even, had volunteered to spend time with Fabiano to give Tess and him time to spend together with Fvienn.   Knowing the ferret's propensity for trying to escape via open doors, Rayek reached out and snatched up Thrafv holding the ferret securely before calling out "Come", activating the main room's automatic doors.

Out of all the people Rayek might have expected at his door,  Taheen and the ambassadorial aide, tr'Hei, were not at all on the list.  Taheen especially did not look happy and Rayek was tempted right there to be rude and order them out, before the problem could really begin.   But he hesitated.

That was all the time that needed for his life to turn upside down.

Taheen stepped forward without hesitation with tr'Hei lingering a step behind.  In her hand, she held a Romulan styled blade that Rayek recognized instantly as a dathe'anofv-sen - an honor blade.  "Rayek. I denounce you for your unfaithfulness during the long years of our engagement.  By the laws you once vowed to uphold I claim the right of Challenge."

When Lared thanked him, Roberto shook his head dismissively. "That is my job as a doctor, really no need to thank me for that." He offered a small smile. That smile, however, faded rather quickly and was replaced by a frown at what Lared then said. Romulans ... they would have let him die?? Lared was actually a Romulan Roberto kinda liked, though many aspects of the culture were just disgusting to the doctor.

While Padrini continued to monitor the readings for a moment longer, Lared asked a question about side-effects. "Actually, there are known to be some side-effects, which are also quite common. But it will fade with time." He tore his eyes away from the bio bed monitor to look at Lared. "I can run a BCP if you like, just in case", he offered.

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Quarters]

Tess had stood up from the chair with Fvienn in her arms and settled down on the blanket with him, putting him down carefully so he could crawl around a bit. At the sound of the door chime, Tess looked back at Rayek just as surprised.

"No, I wasn't", she replied to his question. After Rayek had gotten hold of Thrafv, Tess turned her head when the door opened. Arrain t'Raghaellh? Wtih Mr tr'Hei? She marched right in which bewildered Tess a little. And what the heck was she holding in her hand?? A weapon! Instinctively she reached for Fvienn to hold him closer to her as she followed the Romulan woman's words.

Engagement?

Right of challenge??

She got up from the floor, feeling thoroughly irritated. "Arrain, I'm not sure what makes you think you can show up here with a weapon like that. Put that away at once! And then I would like to know what is going on? I can only assume that this is a misunderstanding."

NPC Ensign Lared tr'Movel
[USS Amalthea - Deck 8 - Sickbay]

NPC Lieutenant jg. Roberto Padrini (Medical)
[USS Amalthea - Deck 8 - Sickbay]

Lared looked up at the doctor uncertain.  "What's a BCP?" the Romulan asked but then thought better of the question.  He wasn't likely going to understand the medical terminology.  Since the feeling was beginning to fade, he shook his head.  "That's not necessary.  The feeling is going away. It was like he was in my head again."

NPC Arrain (Centurion) Taheen t'Raghaellh

NPC Ambassadorial Aide Rhienn tr'Hei (disguise of Telmuk tr'Lhoell, Tal'Shiar operative)
Commander Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - s'Lhoell quarters]

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Quarters]

Tess had stood up from the chair with Fvienn in her arms and settled down on the blanket with him, putting him down carefully so he could crawl around a bit. At the sound of the door chime, Tess looked back at Rayek just as surprised.

"No, I wasn't", she replied to his question. After Rayek had gotten hold of Thrafv, Tess turned her head when the door opened. Arrain t'Raghaellh? Wtih Mr tr'Hei? Taheen had followed Romulan custom with the displaying of the Honor blade - or at least it's replica.  Her family's actual honor blade had been taken from the family when her father had been accused of treason.   The blade she displayed currently was a rubber facsimile - rubber being the only substance the replicator in her room would create a weapon design out of.   With ancient custom rules met, Taheen complied with the Captain's order, sheathing the fake weapon, but she stood her ground firmly.

"There is no mistake. Rayek and I were engaged 14 years ago - an engagement that was never formally canceled.  By Romulan law, I have the right to seek justice for the slight to my honor."

Rayek, who had placed himself between Taheen and his family when he first noted the blade in her hand during her entrance, finally found his voice which had been shocked into silence at her bold opening statement.  "Taheen, while I admit that we had discussed that as a possible plan to save you from being persecuted for your father's crimes, no such engagement was formally made."  He pointed out in clarification.

At this point, Telmuk in the persona of Rhienn, cleared his throat to cut in.  "Actually, Commander - it is you who is mistaken.  The engagement was signed and filed by both Taheen's father and your own, the morning that Senator Tocul was arrested.  The documentation was processed two weeks after his death, but the engagement is valid and binding."

At this point, the aide stepped forward with a PADD holding it out towards Rayek expectantly for him to take.    Which Rayek did with a frown, looking over the electronic form for any sign of counterfeiting.

"While I suspect you are fully aware of Romulan law, I will explain it plainly for your unfortunate wife."  Telmuk turned to regard Tess.  "By Romulan law, the oldest promises are those which the law recognizes foremost.   Your engagement to Rayek began only three years ago whereas his engagement to Taheen has been 14 years and never revoked - therefore the law recognizes her engagement has having legal validity, not yours.   Rayek was never legally able to marry you."

Rayek had quick skimmed the document to the end and his olive coloring paled at seeing his father's signature and verified DNA scan.  Suddenly, the honeymoon holodeck program made sense.  The program background had been based on scans and intel shared with Starfleet after Hobus.  His engagement to Taheen had been in there without his knowing.  Fvadt.  If he'd only bothered to dig deeper into what he perceived was just a holodeck cultural program add in, this could have been avoided.

"Oh, it's bascially a hyperencephalogram, it measures the brain wave acitivity", Roberto explained. He was ready to elaborate further, but Lared made up his mind already. The doctor frowned. Like he was in his head again? With a tap on his comm badge, he called the nurse in the reception area.

Tess listened with growing dread at what she was hearing. How could this be true? She knew how meticulous Rayek was when it came to ruling out any chances and possibilities that might get in the way of their marriage. Tess didn't understand how this could have escaped Rayek's attention or awareness. With a couple of steps she was at her husband's side and glanced down on the PADD Rhien tr'Hei had handed him. It was written in Romulan, while her spoken Romulan had become pretty well, she wasn't able to decipher the script just as quick. At Rhienn's words of explanation Tess met his eyes while she was told that her marriage was invalid.

He chest and stomach tightened almost painfully and sent a wave of almost panic through her. Fvienn started to become upset in her arms, she could feel it. To calm him down, she started to rock him gently. She turned her head to look at Rayek. "Is this true?", she asked glancing down at the PADD. She hoped that he might find some flaw in it that would make this whole ridiculous situation dissolve. "Is there any way we can fight this?", she added another question.

Rayek's hand, the one not holding the PADD, reached out to take hold of Tess' hand reassuringly - though who needed the reassuring more was honestly up for debate. Tess had questions, understandably.  He looked to her unsure what to say.  He was wary of acknowledging the engagement lest the aide or Taheen recording it and then using it as leverage.   Rayek chose to deny.

"I was never informed of such an engagement.  If that truly is my Father's signature," though Rayek was fairly certain is was since all Romulan government agencies even the municipal governments all had the DNA markers as verification  "the fact that he chose not to tell me, is clear indication me that he immediately regretted the decision and likely didn't bother with cancelling it as he, forgive my bluntness, never suspected that you would be spared the fate of the rest of your family."

Even as he was pointing that out, Rayek was aware that his ignorance of the engagement didn't make it any less binding according to Romulan Law.   He needed a better solution, and quite thankfully he thought he had it.

"But all of that is moot, as I chose to reject the Romulan government and defect to the Federation.  I am no longer beholden to any Romulan rule of law! I am a Federation citizen" Rayek declared holding Tess' hand tightly.

He turned to look to Taheen.  "I offer apologies to you for any insult and dishonor this has brought to you but I do not recognize or acknowledge any engagement to you now or 14 years ago."

Taheen was silent throughout Rayek's denial, staring hard at her fiance from years past. It was insulting to hear him reject the legality of Romulan law.

"You were Romulan at the time of the engagement.  The fact that you are a traitor doesn't lessen your obligation - nor can you hide from your obligation in the Federation.  tr'Hei tells me that the Romulan Freestate and the Federation were in the midst of negotiating extradition agreements... for exactly cases like this!"

Telmuk nodded in agreement to Taheen's statement.  Of course, such extradition agreements were years away but if the inevitable were coming, why fight it?  "Commander, why argue a losing case?   Admit your wrongdoing, offer recompense to Taheen for the damage done her, accept your punishment as it were.. and then begin anew." he advised sagely - though in his plans there would be no future anew for Rayek for he would be dead.

To help convince his brother, Telmuk turned to look to Rayek's illegal wife.  "Captain, surely you can see how his fighting this would bring upheaval to the budding alliance between our peoples.  Talk sense into him."

Tess listened with growing dread. It was clear that neither Taheen nor tr'Hei were going to back away from their standpoint. There must be some way out of this! It couldn't be true that her marriage with Rayek was invalid!

He scowl was directed at tr'Hei when he addressed her. "He makes perfect sense to me", she replied firmly. "It is not my intention to burn down the efforts that are made between our people, Mr. tr'Hei, but as Rayek already stated, he is a Federation citized now, and Federatin law applies to our marriage. I want to be granted time to get legal advice on this." She glanced to Rayek to see if he would approve. Of course their contact to Starfleet Command was cut off due to the closing of the worm hole. But then the temporary command on New Bajor would have to do. She didn't want to decide anyhting on this without knowing what their right were.

Then she remembered another thing. She looked to Taheen. "You mentioned the 'right of challenge'. What does that mean?" It sounded very Vulcan to her, but she would know better than to state that out loud.

Telmuk had suspected his brother would use such an excuse, but the Tal Shiar operative was prepared for such an argument.

"Forgive me, Commander, if I find your response less than convincing.  You had no such qualms of acknowledging Romulan law when the same situation occurred on stardate 76011.7."

Rayek looked puzzled at the aide.  Until he realized that the date was his and Tess' holodeck Honeymoon!  His eyes widened.

Telmuk inclined his head at his brother's realization.  "Yes, I had the computer do a search on this topic and discovered that you, while in a holodeck simulation, not only acknowledged your engagement to Taheen but followed through on an appropriate recompense to her and her family.  So to hear you say you never knew about the engagement is a bold faced lie."

Caught by his own action, Rayek tried to explain the situation.  "I thought it was a computer-generated addition, not based on fact." Yet even to Rayek, it sounded weak.

"Then why follow through with recompense if you believed it a mistake - why not just delete that part of the program?" the aide asked "Were you any less a Federation citizen a year and a half ago?"

The question was rhetorical and Telmuk continued speaking, driving his brother into a corner with his well-laid out plan.  "You acknowledged your wrong doing and abided by Romulan tradition then - in a holographic simulation.  So why refuse the same to the actual person you dishonored?  We expected better of a Starfleet officer."

He turned then to Tess. "I understand your desire to legitimize your marriage, Captain, I do.  However, Rayek was a Romulan officer - of the Tal'Shiar - at the time the engagement was brokered," he added the last hoping it would be a bit of a shock value to the Federation Captain. "So it is by Romulan law this will be settled. Seek whatever legal advice you want - but the longer this drags out the worse it looks for the Federation."  His words however had no affect as Rayek had long ago revealed his past to Tess, and Taheen had known from the beginning.

Taheen stood stoic as the Free State ambassadorial aide came through wonderfully on his promise to help her.

Before Rayek could interrupt or make more excuses, Taheen turned to his Federation 'wife' to answer her question.

"The Right of Challenge is an ancient practice used to dispute matters of honor.  It is a trial by combat to determine whose honor the Elements favor."

Rayek spoke up then, continuing the explanation after Taheen seemed to stop. "It is often a battle to the death."

Telmuk interrupted once more. "Given Federation sensibilities, Ms. t'Raghaellh has agreed to forego that requirement and has agreed instead to rule of 'First Blood'."  He smiled slightly.  "It's not like she wants you dead, she merely wants her honor restored.  Honor which you have taken from her by your disregard of your engagement to her."

Tess' eyes widened in disbelief at what the Romulan embassy aide had just said. He had been watching their private holodeck program?! There was probably no greater insolence! And Rayek even backed down and felt like he had to justify himself to him? Tess felt her blood boiling. The information that Rayek had been in the Tal'Shiar she had known for a long time, of course, which is why this caused no reaction in her - unlike the behavior of the two Romulans in her living room.

"I rather think that it looks bad for the Romulan government to learn that the ambassador's aide has gained improper access to private contents of a Federation citizen, a Starfleet captain and his first officer at that!" she said."You should be ashamed of yourself. I don't believe the audacity of you! This will definitely have repercussions. First thing in the morning... no, right now I'll arrange meeting with Ambassador Jarok about this!" Tess was about to talk herself into a frenzy. Did he really think he could do whatever he wanted? Only when Fvienn started crying in her arms did she stop. She soothingly put her hand on the back of the baby's head and began rocking him back and forth. "I'm sorry, my darling, everything is gonna be okay" she whispered.

tr'Hei kept talking about the fight again. And again there was hardly any resistance from Rayek! She just didn't understand. What was wrong with him?

"Well, right now, nothing at all is being done here," Tess said firmly, her voice trembling with agitation. "I want you two to leave right now."

tr'Hei kept talking about the fight again. And again there was hardly any resistance from Rayek! She just didn't understand. What was wrong with him?

"Well, right now, nothing at all is being done here," Tess said firmly, her voice trembling with agitation. "I want you two to leave right now."

Telmuk, as the diligent aide Rhienn, smiled placatingly towards the infuriated Starfleet Captain.  "Improper access?! he repeated back in an astonished tone, "I merely ran a standard computer search on the topic of engagement recompense looking for some Federation-Romulan legal precedent.  Imagine my surprise when the computer answered with this information.  I would not be doing my job proper if I merely ignored it."  He commented mildly as Rayek's wife threatened to call Ambassador Jarok.

Once again, Rayek realized this situation was his own fault.  He'd obviously given the Romulan embassy staff far too strong of authorization and access within the holodeck computer system.  He'd left the Romulus program publicly available but had thought their own story within it would have remained inaccessible.  That all it took was a computer search to access its details was troubling.

It troubled Rayek even more when the aide smiled at Tess' threat to call on the Ambassador.
It was as if the aide knew that the Ambassador's input would just solidify his claim.  Rayek couldn't chance that.

Rayek regarded Tess, whose agitation was clearly felt by Fvienn.  This was becoming far more serious and inter-planetary a situation than it needed to be.  Especially since the fault did lie with him and his past actions.  There was no doubt in his mind that he'd caused this.  He had misled both his and Taheen's fathers into thinking that he desired a match with her.  It should be no surprise that his father had managed to arrange an engagement.

"E'lev... there is no need to make this an inter-planetary issue by involving the Embassy more than it currently is."  The Romulan tactician assessed all the available information and quickly devised what he hoped would be an acceptable compromise.  He reached out to place a calming hand atop his son's head and offered his wife an apologetic smile before turning back towards the pair that were haughtily about to leave.

He looked between the two Romulans. "I'm willing to offer recompense or answer her challenge in payment for the damage done to Taheen's honor because of my ignorance and misunderstanding of the engagement our father's arranged without my knowledge.... under the condition that it is acknowledged by all, including the Romulan embassy, that my marriage to Tess is, and always has been, valid."

Taheen understood why Rayek made such a condition.  He was trying to protect his family - to ensure his son was not labeled a bastard by the Romulan government should the child ever decide to return to it's roots.   But that wasn't Taheen's concern.

"You dare to make conditions?" She scoffed.  "You will come to the holodeck in an hour's time and answer the challenge as is.  Depending on how satisfying your defeat is during 'the Federation-friendly challenge', will determine whether I consider your request or not." Her words were spiteful and full of anger.  Taheen then turned away to leave.

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - s'Lhoell quarters]

Tess was about to burst. If she had been quite vocal earlier, she now held back with some effort and said nothing. Although she was rightly upset, she still had to be careful to maintain a certain etiquette. After all, she was a captain around the clock, not just on duty. And she had to stay calm for Fvienn, too.

She listened silently as Rayek accepted Taheen's demand, but not without adding a condition to it. Which Taheen refused. Tess clenched her jaws so hard they began to ache.

She waited until Taheen and tr'Hei had left, waited a moment longer to make sure they had moved away far enough so that they couldn't hear them anymore, before turning to Rayek and venting her frustration.

"I just don't believe this! You're really going to have this ridiculous fight with her now? You can't be serious!" She paused as she realized that this was all for cultural reasons that they couldn't really do anything about. That didn't make it any better, though. "Is this like the kal-if-fee on Vulcan?" She hoped not. After all, it usually meant fight to the death. She didn't think Rayek would have agreed to this one. She was just confused, and if she was honest, she was a little scared.
