NPC Lieutenant jg. Roberto Padrini (Medical) and NPC Ensign Mitumba (Science)
[P-161129 - Facility compound]

Padrini follewed the conversation with the guard tensly. He wasn't sure where this would end up but it seemed almost unavoidable to use force. Then things turned for the better when the guard recognized the persona Rayek was displaying. Good. Roberto prepared himself to finally enter the section where the anitmatter reactor was and almost overheard the guard's demand for a password. Crap.

He glanced over to the Romulan who, Roberto noted, was very proficient in acting - to use another word for lying.

Suddenly he noticed that Rayek was looking directly at him while subtly making references to his mental ability. Mitumba most likely would know about it since Rayek made his ability public to the crew, but he doubted that he would pick up on the hint the Commander was providing now. It was meant for him. For split second, Roberto found himself wondering why Rayek made a point in almost outright asking him. Rayek had been open to him about his ability but Roberto thought it was only expediency that made him do that. Just like now it was just expediency to later have a point at this situation to proove how 'honest' he was about it now. Or did he want to push the weight of decion-making onto him? Ha! You wish.

However, as much as Roberto didn't want to make it easy for Rayek, the alternative meant fighting their way through. While they outnumbered the sole guard, he was the one with a weapon. Besides the risk of getting actually hurt or worse, there was the danger of the holo projector failing which would cause more damage than there already was.

Holding Rayek's gaze, Roberto looked extremely sternly back to Rayek through the eyes of his persona. He didn't like the situation he had brought him in, he was the Commanding officer after all, he should be making the decisions. Coward. "Yes ...", he finally answered slowly, giving Rayek a . "I know exactly what you mean." He left it at that and let Rayek make his decision on his own.

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell (aka Director Quinley)
[P-161129 - Underground corridor]

NPC Lieutenant jg. Roberto Padrini (Medical) and NPC Ensign Mitumba (Science)
[P-161129 - Facility compound]

Holding Rayek's gaze, Roberto looked extremely stern back to Rayek through the eyes of his persona. He didn't like the situation he had brought him in, he was the Commanding officer after all, he should be making the decisions. Coward. "Yes ...", he finally answered slowly, giving Rayek a "I know exactly what you mean." He left it at that and let Rayek make his decision on his own.

The stern stare he received back prompted a slight smirk from Rayek.   'Such decision-making wasn't so black or white, was it?'  This was definitely one of those grey areas that in the past Rayek's former self would have acted on without hesitation.  Hell, it could have been full on 'in the black' and Rayek's Tal'Shiar training would have still had him go in and not only retrieve the information needed, he would have incapacitated the man from within.

But Rayek was no longer THAT man.  His time spent amid the Federation and his desire to prove himself to Tess meant that Rayek was far more considerate of others now.  He would just slip in, find the information he needed and slip out.  If there were social repercussions to his decision to use his telepathy this way, well, he'd just have to deal with that afterwards... though it definitely helped knowing that even Padrini hadn't had an easy choice of it.

Decision made, Rayek turned back towards the guard who in the intervening time as Rayek feigned a momentary loss of recall, had raised his firearm once more suspiciously.

Using his ability, Rayek focused his mind on the once more alert guard.  There was a momentary resistance, a natural mental barrier that Rayek pushed through to reach the guards surface thoughts.   Out loud Rayek prompted for those thoughts to center on the the passphrase.  "Oh my - what was that code again?"

And there it was! A simple yet exotic phrase that would prove that Rayek or rather his persona as Director Quinley, had permission to access the underground facility beyond.

"Oh yes! I remember now... 'The future is in our grasp - as the winds of change are upon us.'"

Yet even as he spoke from the corner of his eye Rayek noted rapid movement.  With his mind immersed in that of the guard's, Rayek could 'see' the persona that overlapped Takima rushing forward.  The guard's thoughts, training and instincts were to defend with lethal force. A single shot rang out loudly in the underground corridor, before the sound of a body hitting the ground followed.

(ooc I was given direction from Takima's player to have his character attempt to knock out the guard.)

NPC Lieutenant jg. Roberto Padrini (Medical) and NPC Ensign Mitumba (Science)
[P-161129 - Facility compound]

Padrini narrowed his eyes as he noticed the smirk on the female face of Rayek's persona. It was not an amused smirk but a condescending one. Roberto's face darkened as he tried to guess what the Romulan was thinking but that moment ended when Rayek turned away, focusing his attention back on the guard. Shortly after, it became clear what Rayek had chosen to do. Of course.

While Mitumba next to him looked puzzled that the Commander suddenly knew the pass phrase, they didn't get to see if it was really true. Suddenly, Takima surged forward, intending to attack the guard. A shot, Rayek fell down while Takima's shoulder seemed to find its goal and the guard stumblened backwards, the gun clattered to the ground.

"Shit!", Roberto gasped and rushed to the Romulan to see how bad his injury was. At the same time Mitumba rushed forward to pick up the pistol from the floor and was now pointing it at the guard who slowly raised his hands but looked at them furious.

"What is this all of this about?", he barked.

Mitumba didn't reply but just silently pointed the gun at him. He glanced to Roberto who was crouching down next to the Commander. He felt the overwhelming urge to swish his tail but the holo porjectors made it being squeezed to his legs because obviously his tail would ruin his disguise. Being denied that inherent Caitian instinct felt very uncomfortable. "How bad is it?", he asked the doctor.

"Just a flesh wound", Roberto replied and looked at Rayek. "I don't have medical equipment with me right now", he said in a lowered voice so only Rayek would hear it. "I can find something to use as a compressing dressing to make it stop bleeding until we are back at the shuttle."

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell (aka Director Quinley)
[P-161129 - Underground corridor]

That the guard fired while trying to change targets from Rayek to Takima, was likely the sole reason that Rayek's injury was as minor as it was.   Still, the Romulan was annoyed that the bullet that had grazed the side of his hip, had managed to drop him like a sack of potatoes.  Yet he really didn't have time at the moment to worry about his ego... they had a mission to complete.

He nodded at Padrini's suggestion to find something to use as a compression dressing, then looked towards Mitumba standing watch over the still conscious, and furious, guard who was demanding to know why he'd been attacked.

Ugh. What a mess! So much for not drawing attention to themselves.  Rayek's eyes sought Takima and fixed the other Romulan with a reprimanding glare.  This could have been avoided easily if Takima had just followed orders and had a little more patience.  Now they needed to ensure the guard didn't sound any alarm once they continued on into the underground facility.  Rayek sighed.

"Someone knock him out and bind him!" Rayek snapped, irritable from the pain of his wound.  "We can't have him calling for reinforcements..."  Or seeing the oddity of green blood when the locals were blue-blooded.  Thankfully, Padrini's tending of him currently was blocking the guard's view of Rayek's injury.

While Takima and Mitumba finished dealing with the knocked out guard, dragging him off to the side and mostly out of sight, Rayek allowed Padrini to bind his wound.  Once a makeshift compression dressing was tied in place, Rayek had the doctor assist him to his feet.   The pain flared with the movement and Rayek sucked in air through clenched teeth.  It subsided once he was upright with his weight mostly supported by Padrini.

The pain didn't matter.  "We have to keep moving.  Mitumba, lead the way."  Rayek turned to Padrini.  The man had tended his wounds professionally despite their personal issues... the least Rayek could do was thank him properly.  "Thank you, doctor.  Your assistance is invaluable."

Unwrapping his arm from around Roberto's supporting shoulder, Rayek motioned Rojol over to him.  "You can take over as my support, since this is because of your impatience."  Also this way Rayek could have some physical control over the other Romulan so to prevent his rushing ahead again.

And so off then went through the gate and past the metal door into the emergency lit corridor beyond - looking for the anti-matter fuel source.

NPC Lieutenant jg. Roberto Padrini (Medical) and NPC Ensign Mitumba (Science)
[P-161129 - Facility compound]

Rayek's barked order helped Mitumba to snap out of his state of shock. With the guard being knocked out now, Mitumba grapped the other end of the man and helped him drag him to the side out of sight where they needed to go. The guard carried a pair of handcuffs with him. They put those on his hands while binding his feet with a rope they found in what seemed to be a small storage room not far from them.

In the meantime, Roberto took care of Rayek's wound. The spot the bullet had hit him was extremely unfavourable. It was hard to apply a dressing that provided the necessary pressure for the bleeding to stop without it slipping out of place when moving. While he helped Rayek to his feet after that was done he really wished the dress Rayek's persona was wearing wouldn't be cut so low.

"Aye, Sir", Mitumba acknowledged as Rayek ordered him to lead the way and he walked by them with the tricorder in hand.

Roberto still had his hand around Rayek's arm to support him as he thanked him. But he was annoyed. "Control him, Commander!", Roberto hissed lowly with a definite head-nod to Takima as his fingers curled tighter into the fabric of the holo-projected sleeve of the dress. He thought all of it was Rayek's fault. He liked blaming the Romulan. He didn't want to have more people injured just because of the recklessness of Takima.
Letting him go, since Rayek wanted Takima to support him, Roberto had an scrutinizing eye on both of them before following Mitumba down the corridor.

The corridor seemed to be endless, but eventually they reached a metal door. "It's in here", he said as he looked at the tricorder. Luckily Mitumba had thought about taking the wad of keys from the guard with him. It didn't take long and the Caitian had found the matching key and the door swung open with a high-pitched squeaking sound.

It was an odd sight. In the middle of the room sat the anti-matter reactor case, its futuristic nature enhanced by the rather primitive contraptions the reactor had been connected to. Mitumba approached the device and checked the mechanism that would open the reactor's casing and reveal the anti-matter fuel.

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell (aka Director Quinley)
[P-161129 - Underground compound]

Padrini's low hiss in reply to his expression of thanks caught Rayek by surprise, but then it really shouldn't have.  The man was growing bolder the longer that Rayek respected Tess' wish to have them 'work it out between them'.   Tess never really saw Padrini like this.  The doctor was always much more civil in her presence.

While Mitumba and Padrini went on ahead, Rayek followed behind with Takima.   The more he walked, the more the pain increased.  He did his best to keep his discomfort to himself but it grew more difficult as the minutes passed.

They had finally arrived at the source of the radiation and sure enough it was the engine core for the Friendship-2 probe.  Rayek could see where the outer casing had been damaged - either in some impact that had knocked out of its intended trajectory, in the crash that brought it down to this planet, or by early attempts to open the casing by those studying the probe and its engine.   It was from this crack that much of the radiation was leaking.  While not immediately lethal to the away team, the longer they were exposed the more damage it did.   Unlike the native population, the away team had no natural immunity to this type of radiation.

Rayek leaned on Takima rather heavily after walking the corridor.  Though the distance, he knew from Mitumba's earlier scan, was under 500 meters, the walk had seemed to go on forever for the injured Romulan.  Sweat beaded on his brow.  Unfortunately, there wasn't time to take a break.

Rayek pulled from his persona's satchel the magnetic bottle that they were going to collect the anti-matter fuel in.  He was grateful that the bottle was sturdier than it looked and hadn't been damaged in his recent shooting.  It would have meant they'd have to come up with some other plan to sabotage the facility and ensure that their technology didn't end up influencing this world.

Initially, Rayek had intended to transfer the anti-matter fuel himself since it required a steady hand and because being Vulcanoid normally meant one had a strong resilience to radiation exposure such as what might be anticipated from handling a damaged damaged container.  Yet during just the span of time it had taken them to walk the less than 500 meters of the corridor, Rayek found that his condition had worsened.  His whole body was feeling pain... not just the injury site and it was steadily getting worse, to the point he would need to make mention of it to Padrini.

His hand twitched slightly as he held the important device and considered who best to take over.   Takima was Vulcanoid like himself and therefore likely more resistant to the direct radiation exposure, and being a skilled pilot the man did have the steady hand that would be needed, but his recent actions had Rayek preferring not to rely on the other Romulan.   That left Padrini or Mitumba.

Padrini also had steady hands, but the process to transfer over the fuel could take several minutes - and that was time Rayek suspected he may not have.

Decision made, Rayek waved Mitumba closer and held out the magnetic bottle to him with a trembling hand.  "You'll have to do the transfer.  I can't - not in this condition."

Only once the responsibility of the task was passed on did Rayek look to Padrini.  "Something is making me weaker.   I won't make it back to the shuttle at this rate, even if we are successful here."

Panting at the effort to have even said that much, Rayek motioned Takima to help him to the ground.  He tried to look at the wound but whatever was wrong was not being translated across through the holo-program.

NPC Lieutenant jg. Roberto Padrini (Medical) and NPC Ensign Mitumba (Science)
[P-161129 - Facility compound]

They were waiting for Rayek's orders but nothing came from the Romulan. Padrini looked over at him and noticed immediately that he looked worse than before. But why? Surely, it was a nasty flesh wound and he had no means of giving him an analgesic to ease the pain a bit - but on the other hand the Romulan took the pain of centimeter-long stitching without complains.

At being called, Mitumba moved over to Rayek and took the containment bottle from him. The young Caitian would have preferred not having to do it, but it was clear the Commander was in no good condition. "Aye, Sir", Mitumba acknowledged and moved back to the reactor with the bottle.

As Mitumba passed by him, Roberto grabbed the man's tricorder and moved over to Rayek who had slid down on the floor by now. Crouching down the doctor started scanning. This wasn't a medical tricorder so he wouldn't get as detailed readings as with that but it would give some helpful insight.

At first he noticed nothing unusual. Then something piqued his interest. The scanner showed hints of a very rare metal, only very small amounts of it and only when he moved the tricorder over the spot of the wound. Locking on the small piece of metal in form of the bullet in Rayek's hip, Padrini took more detailed scans. Then the puzzled frown was replaced by an ominous realization. A stern look met Rayek's.

"One of the metal components of the bullet is reacting with the copper in your blood. It's compounding and creating a toxic product that spreads quickly through your blood stream. We have to get you back to the ship or at least to the shuttle quickly."

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell (aka Director Quinley)
[P-161129 - Underground compound]

Padrini's discovery of the toxic reaction his copper-base blood was having because of the presence of the alien bullet, didn't given the Romulan any piece of mind, especially when the doctor stated that he needed to get to the ship or at least the shuttle quickly.

It had taken them easily a half hour to walk to the facility from where the shuttle had been landed.  And that had been at a brisk pace; it would be double that if the others had to carry him back.   The quickest way to get to the shuttle (or the ship's Sickbay) of course would be to be beamed there.  But current radiation levels made that highly dangerous.

Rayek turned to look to Mitumba who was was preparing to begin the rather delicate and dangerous transfer of anti-matter fuel from the damage engine core into the magnetic bottle.  It was not a process that could be rushed - not without dire consequences for them all.  Going anywhere 'quickly' was not an option it seemed.

Rayek wiped the sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand and looked back towards Padrini.   "I'm not going to be able to make it to the shuttle without significant aid." he stated flat out.  He slumped his head forward weakly unable to keep it upright.  An expanse of blue cleavage was his view and Rayek's feverish thoughts found it morbidly amusing to have survived a possible assassination attempt only to die from a minor flesh wound looking like this.  He wished he could just drop the alias and at least face death as himself.  Actually see the wound that was poisoning him so swiftly.

That's when the thought struck him.  "Would it not slow the toxin production if the fragments were removed?"  he mumbled weakly.

He gave a slight head-nod towards Matumba,  "Have him continue with the anti-matter fuel transfer, while Takima moves back down the hall to be sure we're not interrupted, I drop the holo-projection.. you can then see the wound properly and dig out the bullet fragment."  Rayek thought it sounded like a reasonable plan... better than dying trying nothing at all.

NPC Lieutenant jg. Roberto Padrini (Medical) and NPC Ensign Mitumba (Science)
[P-161129 - Facility compound]

"It would", Roberto replied to Rayek's question. "But I have no instruments at all for an operation here right now." He looked around the room but it was almost empty. He spotted a cabinet of some sort and while Rayek went on to speak, suggesting a way to resolve the dilemma, he walked over there and started to rummage through it in the hopes to find something that would help him.

In the meantime, Mitumba had started the very critical task of transfering the antimatter fuel. The discussion around him that the Commander was being poisened and his life in danger didn't help him to concentrate on the task at hand - quite the opposite. He felt pressure on him to do this quickly, but that meant more room for overisghts. The coming minutes felt like the longest and most horrendous of his life.

"This will have to do." Roberto returned with a pair of sort of pliers that looked very crude and also not very clean since it seemed they were used as a tool for machines. But it was better than digging into the wound with his fingers, he could damage more tissue that way, push the bullet in even deeper and make things worse as they already were.

"I have no anaesthetic", he warned but didn't worry about that too much. Once the room was secured Roberto turned Rayek's holo projected disguise off with the PADD he had with him and then able to see the wound clearly - well, as clearly as possible in this quality of light. The wound had bled through the improvised dressing and Roberto now removed it to take a closer look. "I can see it", he said as he bent down to hip level. "Okay, grab something to bite on, this is gonna hurt." Re-adjusting the grip on the pliers, Roberto pushed the tips of them into the wound until he felt them touching the small piece of metal that was stuck in Rayek's hip. Unfortunately, since the pliers had rounded tips and the bullet was also round it was difficult to get a hold of it. Roberto muttered some curses in Italian under his breath as he dug in that wound. Then, after what felt like an eternity, the pliers grabbed the bullet in a good angle and Roberto pulled it out in a swift motion which surely would be pure torture for the Romulan.
The removal of the bullet caused a gush of green blood coming out of the now unobstructed wound. The pliers and also Roberto's hands were covered in Rayek's blood.

The bullet landed on the stone floor with a subtle 'cling' sound before Roberto tore a piece off of the cloth he had used a a dressing before, folded it several times until it was a tight dense fabric and then pushed it on the open wound before using the rest to wrap it over it, hoping it would be a more or less decent compression dressing.

Rojol had done what he had done. He had no regrets. The inside of him felt they were going digging more in a hole. Any way it was done. The commander was injured and they learned the metals had poisoned the commander cause of their blood. And Rayek had allowed the doctor to transfer the antimatter.

“I can do it,” he growled to Rayek. There was a glare to the Commander. This guy was a poor choice of choosing who will do stuff. Why put Mitumba in danger. Then everyone was concern over Rayek. That was when Rojol had decided to use that a distraction. He went over to Mitumba and held his hand to the Caitan.

“Give it to me,” he said.

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell (aka Director Quinley)
[P-161129 - Underground compound]

Rayek glanced at the pliers Padrini was holding and if he'd had any sort of energy remaining he might have tried to talk the doctor out of using them.  Fvadt.  It was almost like the man was trying to make his more difficult than it should be.   'What doctor goes on an Away Mission without some sort of Med kit?' Rayek's thought grumbled.

The announcement from Padrini that he didn't have any anesthetic was met with a slight 'just get on with it' stare from Rayek.  Of course, the doctor would likely expect that reaction since for minor injuries Rayek would often decline the usually analgesic and dermal regenerator for something more traditional like stitches.   The key concept in that premise however was 'minor injury'; and while the injury now itself was minor, its effect on Rayek's system was rather significant, and aggressive.  Right now, Rayek certainly wouldn't opposite a dose of analgesic or (after having look at the clearly rusted and unsanitary pliers) a tetanus shot and an hypo of antibiotics.

Rayek closed his eyes, so not wanting to witness the moment when Padrini would plunge that unclean tool into his wound.  The warning to grab something to bite on came a bit too late.  Rayek barely had the energy to stay conscious, reaching for an orthotic to bite down on was out of the question.  Though the moment Padrini dug into his side, Rayek wished he'd been able to grab one, because the bullet's poisoning seemed to have reduced his pain threshold to ridiculous levels.  Rayek let out a pained gasp and would have pulled away, if it was at all in his ability but the poisoning had taken even that from him.

He tried to reopen his eyes, despite his earlier misgivings about watching, thinking maybe if he could see just how small the wound was he could better control the pain... but his eyelids were just too heavy to lift.  He could hear Padrini muttering cusses in Italian - and Rayek thought the sentiment was so appropriate for the situation.

The digging in his side seemed to go on for an eternity, but what Rayek recognized was probably less than a minute or two... then the movement stilled, ominiously, forewarning of what was to come.  The sharp agony of probing pliers was replaced with a rip of excrutating torment that was expressed in a single groaned exclamation of pain.    Though Rayek wished for the release of unconsciousness... he was denied that wish, remaining fully aware of the feel of everything but unable to do a damn things about it.

When he felt the press of fabric against his wound, Rayek hoped the worst was over.

NPC Lieutenant jg. Roberto Padrini (Medical)
[P-161129 - Facility compound]

Padrini cursed himself that he he not taken a medkit with him. The reason he hadn't was that it would have been impossible to hide, carrying this thing around with him in this era. What he should have been thinking about though was at least a hypospray-injector and one or two vials which could have been hidden in the trouser pocket easily.

Now he hoped that mistake wouldn't cost a life.

Despite Roberto's dislike of Rayek he really wasn't out to cause more pain to the man than necessary, he actually did the almost primeval way of doing this as quick as he could. Then eventually the bullet and with it the source of the toxin production was gone. Grabbing the tricorder again, Roberto did another scan of Rayek.

"We'll have to get you to sickbay", he repeated with even more urgency this time. "The source of the problem is removed but the toxin is still spreading through your body. Considering how much your condition has worsened in only a couple of minutes, I'm not sure- ..." He trailed off, leaving for Rayek to fill in the blank on his own.

Roberto scanned again, and again and then a slight improvement started to show. Apparently mustered up all of its strength to fight the remaining toxins without the metal component of the bullet going on to create new toxins. It might buy them some time.

[P- 161129 - facility compound]

Mitumba was highly concentrated on his critical task. Not that the pressure that was on him and the blood-chilling screams of pain coming from the corner behind him were tearing down his concentration and calmness, now the other Romulan, despite he had been told to stand guard so nobody would see the Commander without his disguise.

The figure next to him and his demanding words were very distracting and the Caitian had to force himself to keep his hands steady while he was uncertain what to do. Should he start to argue with him? Or pass the task over although after the recent behaviour of the Romulan Mitumba wouldn't like to trust this task to him. But did they have time for a discussion now? From what he heard the Commander's life was in danger.

Reluctantly, Mitumba scooted over, holding the bottle still steady but in a way that Rojol could take it over.

Rojol was feeling that each second was a minute because Mitumba seemed to be staying still. Rojol was assuming the Caitan was nervous as heck. Again it felt like 2 minutes when it was more like 1.5 seconds when Mitumba was allowing him to take over the dangerous task by capturing the antimatter radiation.

He slowly slid over and he careful took over. He was focusing staying calm with slow breaths like when he meditates. The agony scream from Rayek was indeed a distract however Rojol figured he was the better man for this job,

“Go watch see if anyone is coming,” Rojol told the nervous Mitumba.

But did they have time for a discussion now? From what he heard the Commander's life was in danger.

Reluctantly, Mitumba scooted over, holding the bottle still steady but in a way that Rojol could take it over.

Even though Padrini was done poking about at his hip for the bullet fragment that had been poisoning him, and had bandaged him up well enough that the viridescent bleeding had stopped, Rayek remained where he was, laying on his back, sprawled out on the cold cement floor of the underground facility, unable to move.

Padrini's urgent repetition of his earlier statement that they had to get him to Sickbay,  suggested to Rayek that their plan to remove the source of the toxin had only had limited success.  The doctor's next words confirmed that.  Rayek let out a slow strained breath.   He really wasn't in any condition to be going anywhere, but remaining here after they collected the anti-matter fuel wasn't an option.

Rayek snorted his derision of Padrini's cut off statement.  No way he was going to die here!

He moved his head to look past the doctor to check on Mitumba's progress with the anti-matter fuel transfer, and was surprised to see Rojol standing at the reactor core instead of the Caitian.  The flare of annoyance Rayek felt at having his orders ignored was muted as he watched the care with which Rojol was doing the work.  The Romulan flight officer was the better pick for the task, so for the moment Rayek chose to leave the man continue without reprimand.

"Help me up." he instructed Padrini.  When it seemed like the doctor was going to balk at the order, Rayek sighed.  "Lieutenant Takima has the transfer well in hand.  He doesn't need our oversight.  You and I will start walking back to the shuttle.  We'll call up to the ship requesting emergency beam up the moment radiation levels make it possible to do so.  Takima and Mitumba can finish up here and return in the shuttle."

It wasn't a great plan.  Rayek hated leaving two very inexperienced officers on their own to complete the mission, but to remain would risk leaving Tess without a husband and Fvienn without a father; and that he would not do!

With a grunt of effort, Rayek forced himself to sit up regardless of Padrini's help or not.  "Lieutenant Takima," Rayek wheezed, his voice quiet; out of breath from  just the effort of sitting up.  But he knew the other Romulan could hear him perfectly fine.

"I'm relying on you to complete this mission with no further mishap.  Do this right, and I'll overlook your disobeying orders this once."  Rayek was tempted to follow up his generous offer with an equally persuasive threat - he'd heard Lek comment on the effectiveness of "scrubbing the hull with a toothbrush" - but recognized that such a punitive mentality was not one favored by his wife, so he held himself back from speaking it.

Rayek then looked back to Padrini, nodding to indicate he was ready to make the attempt to stand, and with another concerted and painful effort made it to his feet somewhat unsteadily.  He found he needed to lean on the doctor quite a bit to remain upright.

"As much as I hate to say it, I'll need my holo-disguise activated once more, in case we run come across any of the locals.   On the upside, if they question what is wrong... we can claim I've been affected by the radiation and urge them to keep their distance." Rayek suggested once he was able to catch his breath and speak.

While he was steeling himself for the effort walking would require, he took a moment to be sure Takima was prepared to so this solo.  "Takima, you know the mission goals.  Any questions before you are on your own?"

Mitumba hesitated for a second longer, then nodded his head at the higher-ranking officer's words. "Yes, sir", he confirmed and then crossed the room and walked past the injured Commander not without a concerned sideglance.

Making his way back down the corrior they came from, he stopped near the location where the tied up guard were and listened for unwelcome visitors. Luckily, his superior hearing was not affected by the holo-projection so he would be alarmed in time, he hoped.

Roberto's initial reaction to Rayek's prompt to help him up was reluctance, but the Romulan didn't give him time to voice that. Instead he offered a suggestion for a plan and Roberto had to admin, it seemed like their only choice to avoid worse.

Roberto nodded and help Rayek up to his feet. It wasn't easy to steady the taller Romulan, but with a firm grip around Rayek's hip he managed. Though he feared they would be painfully slow like this. Sourly the doctor noted that Rayek was willing to overlook disobediance by the follow Romulan. Typical. He could act like a wild man, endanger the whole away team and get away with it. At Rayek's reminder that he needed his holographic disguise turned on again, Roberto nodded. Fumbling with the PADD with one free hand Roberto quickly activated the projectors again and Rayek transformed into the three-breasted blue-skinned woman again.

"Let's go", Roberto muttered if not for the life-threatening situation Rayek was in then he wanted at least to hurry for his own sake.

While Rayek was assuring himself once more that Takima would be fine, a thought occurred to Roberto. He turned his head towards the door that led to the corridor that hopefully would carry his words to Mitumba at the other end of it. "Mitumba", he called. "Do you see a barrow or anything else with wheels somewhere around there?" He thought that was the only thing that would make them be quicker than having to drag a Romulan behind him who got weaker by the minute.

Mitumba at the other end did pick up Roberto's voice and started to look around. He recalled that there had been a maintenance storage of some kind near where the guard had been left by them. And really, shortly after he found a wheelbarrow that was probably used to transport heavy equipment or something like that. "I have found one here", the Caitian called back.
