S1M3 - Cloak of Deceit
« on: June 07, 2021, 04:34:52 pm »
Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck 4 - Ready Room]

Captain's Log. Stardate 76433.79144469828

I just have received word from the Romulan Ambassador Jarok on Katra Station, who wishes to meet with us. It appears to be his mission to hear out every single Romulan in this area. Since we have a Romulan family on board, it seems only ... logical that he would take up the long way. So I should not be surprised. But I am. Of course we will comply with his request and meet up with him.

This will be my crew's first official diplomatic encounter, so I will call in a meeting with the department heads to give them time to prepare properly. We might not always be able to enjoy the luxury of advanced planning for such an event. It will be a good training for them.

I am looking forward to this meeting for another reason. More about that later.

End Log.

Tess leaned back and took a sip of her tea mug. The tea had turned cold by now and she put it aside with a slight grimace. She glanced at the chronometer to check the time. The meeting was about to begin. Time flew by every day. She would have thought she'd have another ten minutes.

Grabbing her PADD, she locked the access to the computer at her desk and then took the private turbolift that led directly to her Ready Room. Riding one deck down to deck 5, she stepped out of the turbolift and walked quite elated down the hall as she headed towards the briefing room. Today was a good day.

[USS USS Amalthea- Lobby]

Computer had shared where  Cadet Tordel t'Movel  was located. The Romulan had planned to go say hi to her. He had got far as walking down the corridor and then as he was getting closer to her he lost his confidence. Perhaps there was another way to tactical way to approach her. He had decided to turn to head to the lounge where he had sat down to think was he up to wanting to ask her for a date?

Then he noticed he was being summoned to the bridge a little before his shift. It seemed Chief of Flight, who was the father of the Romulan he was fancy over. He was interested in Lared’s family. Not only his daughter but also his mother. She had the old Romulan military in her which he had liked. Perhaps the t’Movel was a family he was going to feel close to home with on the ship.

He had some time before heading to the bridge. He had decided to chill for the few moments he had. Who knows if there was anyone interesting crew member would walk in the lobby.

USS Amalthea - Engine Room

"Stand by on the hot update," Mas said as he prepped the release on his console, "Vrix, confirm we are on auxiliaries on all channels."

The trill cadet nodded at his console.  "Aye, Sir.  Confirmed- all computer functions are being handled by the auxiliary core.  Primary core is entirely isolated and in standby mode for update."

"Acknowledged." Mas pressed an icon, "Hot Update Initiated... This will take about five minutes."  He tapped his badge,   =/\= Engineering to Ops.  The software update is now underway.  It should be transparent to you, but let us know if anything seems amiss. =/\=

At that moment, T'Pan entered engineering to take over the shift.  "I see the software update is proceeding on schedule," she noted.

Vrix nodded, "That'll be the last time a holodeck program leaks all over the ship.  Every system will be firewalled from every other system, with command-level authorization needed to pass between them."

"I remain concerned about the safety bypasses for the Medical hologram," T'Pan said, as she came up beside Mas.

"A legitimate concern," Mas acknowledged, "but I think the authentication system we came up with will prevent any problems, be they false-authorizations, or authentic authorizations that get rejected."

T'Pan nodded once, "I shall endeavor to adopt your optimism.  I stand ready to relieve you, Sir."

Mas stood, "You know the protocols.  Call me if there is a problem."

T'Pan took the seat he'd vacated, her eyes studying the progress updates.  "Of course."

With that, Mas took his leave of Engineering.  He had a meeting to get to.

USS Amalthea - Phaser Range

Droplets of sweat beaded on her skin, as Ora wiped her blue forehead with the back of her sleeve. Her eyes laser focused onto the blackness that surrounded her. Her entire body tensed up, the anticipation had her heart pounding in her chest, as she waited. Each second that ticked by, made the waiting longer, that made the tension even stronger inside of her. Suddenly the blackness erupted into bright lights, one after another, until all four of them had been extinguished by her phaser fire!  Twelve perfect rounds.

Ora was about to start another round, when her combage beeped loudly. She had it programmed to give a specific tonal sound when any communication came in from either the Captain or the Commander. She refused to be caught off guard when they finally announced her replacement. She didn’t know what was taking so long with her demotion, clearly she had not only broken the chain of command during their first mission, but then when the holodeck went wonky she allowed the Commander to become injured. Those kinds of failures did not make for promotion, but a demotion.

It was one of the reasons she was training and pushing her body so hard lately. She wanted to be the best security officer, and to be able to get back to where she once stood. She might be down now, but that didn’t mean Ora was out of the fight. No, the battle would continue, and she would end up victorious once more!

Ora got out her PADD, and read the message for all of the department heads to meet up. She wasn’t sure what it was about, perhaps this was the announcement for the new Head of Security? She would have thought she’d have been informed first, but there was no actual regulation of such a requirement. She returned to her room, quickly showered off the sweat, and put on a clean uniform. The last thing she wanted to do was be smelly and sweaty for the somber occasion.

Ora nodded to those that had been gathered in the meeting room. She greeted her acquaintance like friend, “Ensign Malone, I have to thank you for the latest update to the phaser range. It is quite challenging.”

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck 5 - Briefing Room]

The request for a visit from the Romulan Ambassador was unwelcome news to Rayek.  Unlike his wife, he didn't view this meeting in any sort of positive light.   A request to meet with every Romulan on Amalthea would necessary have to include himself and their son.   Yet it was Rayek's fervent wish that the Romulan government not be given any information about him or his family here among Starfleet.

He'd managed to keep himself busy and elsewhere every time that there had been some diplomatic function that officers were supposed to attend, so Rayek had yet to meet the either the diplomatic envoys.  But he'd reviewed the aptly named brief on the Ambassador when the man first arrived on Katra back in December.  The information available had been limited.  And it was even more so when it came to the Ambassador's Aide.  It would have been more advantageous to ask for the man put in a resume for a local position and use that information - there would be just as much intel from that as from the brief he'd been handed at the time as StratOps of Katra.  While it was true the Romulan's had agreed to share information about the Embassy staff, it didn't help much when that information had huge gaps in it.  But limited information was to be expected when the hub of all Romulan Intelligence had been lost with the destruction of Hobus and Romulus.

In a way, Rayek had been relieved when Tess and he had been assigned off the station.  It put distance between him and the face of the new Romulan government.  While it was true this government, the  was not technically the same as the one that had he'd been warned was going to 'clean up' after Ambassador Kalavak's death - he had no doubt that at the time they would have viewed him as expendable as well.

Now six months later, the Ambassador was making a house call.  Yeah, Rayek was not happy, especially since to do his job effectively during their time on time, he would need to be actively involved.   Yeah, Rayek was no happy one whit about the upcoming news.

Currently, he was already in the briefing room with the intel on the Amabassador, and his entourage of one aide, set up on his PADD ready to share.

[USS Amalthea - Deck 5 - Briefing Room]

When Tess entered the Briefing Room, she found Rayek already there, along with Ensigns Loxis and Molane. Casting a smile over at her husband whom she naturally had already seen this morning. He looked grumpy, and Tess knew why. She could see the reason for his wish to have the ambassador stay away. Tess' probable slight naivity in that regard had her not suspect any ties people in Rayek's past might have to the ambassador. If she was honest, she still thought it highly unlikely. But Rayek did not. She would have a hyper alert Romulan First Officer on shift and a hyper alert husband at home for the duration of the ambassador's stay on board the Amalthea.

While she was thinking that, she smiled over at Ora - who Tess felt like always seemed like she awaited something bad whenever she dealt with her; she'd have to seek to talk to her soon - and Mas, as well. "Good morning", she greeted them. Stopping at the replicator, she ordered coffee. "Ensign Molane, how is the software update coming along?", she asked, looking up briefly before she grabbed the cup that had materialized in the replicator's alcolve.

Tess had done her best to move on from the holodeck incident as quick as possible. That her brother was kind of involved in it was something she didn't deal with easily. Of course it had been Ensign Heikkinen who had fabricated that mess, but the others have approved of it silently when they should have stepped in.
Pushing those thoughts aside she walked along the long table, rounded the seats and then sat down next to Rayek while she looked over at Mas for a reply and waited for the rest of the officers to arrive.

[USS Amalthea - Deck 5 - Briefing Room]

The young man entered the briefing room and took a seat which was open which was near the door. He had no clue who the seat belonged to. This was his first briefing meeting with the New Romulan government and he had to smile inside his head. It seemed the ‘traitor’ was not happy. He was not sure why he did not like Rayek. It could be the influence of Lared tr'Move’s mother. That was part of it. And this telepathy ability which he kept quiet.

He then leaned back in his chair and placed his hands together as he waited for the meeting to start. He did take a look over on everyone because one seems to do that in meetings. Then when he placed his focus on the captain.

USS Amalthea - Deck 5 - Briefing Room

Ora nodded to both the Captain and the Commander when they entered the room. She never quite knew how to act around the two, and she just stood at attention. She saw that the Captain had gotten coffee from the replicator. While they all waited to see what Ensign Malone would say, Ora followed the Captain’s direction. She went over the replicator and got a coffee too. Black, she didn’t like anything else in it. She preferred the bitter taste of the rich, dark roast to the coffee.

Before she went back to the table, she also ordered an orange juice and a couple of muffins. Ora sat the juice and muffins in front of Mas, before she took her normal security stance at the back of the room. She sipped the coffee, while she waited for the others to arrive. She listened quietly in the back, curious to see what Ensign Malone’s response would be to the Captain.

The ship and crew would be safer, once the holodeck issues were settled. The last thing any of them needed was another malfunction. She didn’t want to imagine what new program would take over the ship. One treasure hunting experience was quite enough for them all.

USS Amalthea - Briefing Room

Mas entered the briefing room, noting that some of his fellow officers had arrived before him.  He was sure he was on time, but some of his coworkers were 'on time is actually late' people who always got to places a bit early.  An admirable work ethic.

When Ora thanked him for upgrading the phaser range, Mas 'smiled' and shrugged, "Well, I was mucking about with the holo-systems anyway.  Was a small detour to make some minor upgrades.  I'm glad you like it."

As Mas took a seat, the Captain came in and wished everyone a good morning while retrieving a beverage.

Were they allowed to replicate food?  He was never sure.  He eyed the replicator longingly.

When the Captain took her own seat, she asked about the software update.  "Good Morning!  Well Captain, if I can say so out loud without inviting disaster..."  He looked briefly at the ceiling as though expecting some unseen deity to cast a curse down.  "The upgrades should be complete by the time this meeting is over.  The holo-systems will be compartmentalized with firewalls between each section, so that a program will be unable to 'leak' or 'move' from one section to another.  Not without a command-level authorization or a medical emergency.  And any program changes made to one section should be isolated there.  So burning the safety settings in Holodeck 1 will not impact any settings in Holodeck 2, or anywhere else for that matter.

In essence, instead of the ship being one continuous holodeck, it will become dozens and dozens of isolated holodeck zones running in isolated instances with independent software control."

At that moment, as though sensing the rumbling of his stomachs, Ora deposited some juice and muffins in front of Mas.  What a lovely Bolian!  He picked up a muffin and stuffed it into his cavernous maw, munching happily.

[USS Amalthea - Briefing Room]

Verlok entered the Briefing Room briskly, acknowledging his hindmost, but not late, arrival - whilst recognising the meeting had yet to start - and immediately took his seat at the table. Unusually, his ordinarily well-set hair was marginally out of place at small points, and his tunic was slightly off-set from centre, not at all like his usually pristine turn-out.

None of these aspects breached uniform regulations, nor looked discourteous to the position the Science Officer enjoyed. If anyone had any particular scrutiny of his turn-out, it would be seen as atypical but not remarkable on anyone but the Vulcan sat before them.

Once sat, he reached out and poured a glass of water from the jug that was on the table. And, perhaps also unremarkable for anyone but he, immediately drank from it rather than leave it untouched merely as an social ornament. The glass wasn't drained, but it was refilled and placed back on the table to remain, at this time, left to one side as per the norm.

[USS Amalthea - Deck 5 - Briefing Room]

Tess sipped at the cup of coffee while she held Mas' gaze, looking at him over the rim of the cup. In the corner of her eye she noticed Ora fetching something from the replicator as well. A moment later she saw what it was. Muffins. It seems intended mainly for the Lurian Ensign since she put it right in front of him. Which for some reason was a little amusing. No doubt Mas would greatly appreciate the gesture. Who would blame him. Those muffins did look fantastic!

Turning her attention back to the Engineer's report, Tess nodded, happy. "Perfect. My main concern with any such restricting software was for the EMH. If the firewall requires any extra authorizations to allow the program to run shipwide independantly from any location, we should make sure that those are set up and working. Maybe it would be best to test it, just to be sure." She smiled at Mas, hoping it didn't make him feel like she didn't trust him or his team to make the proper settings. "Good work", she nodded at him.

Her attention then was drawn to the s'Movel family attending. Not the whole family, though. Just those of them who were officers, which namely were Lared tr'Movel and his daughter, Ensign Tordel t'Movel. Almost at the same time, Ensign Takima joined them as well. Tess had explicitly invited them to the meeting, since they the ambassador's visit mainly was for them, they would be in contact with him, so she wanted to make sure they got a proper preparation for such a diplomatic encounter.

Last, but surely not least, Ensign Verlok entered the Briefing Room. The Vulcan seemed rushed, like he had tried to avoid to be late to the meeting, which was a bit unusual, but she wouldn't want to deny the Vulcan the mistake of losing track of the time once in a while. And the meeting had not begun yet anyways.
While Tess took another sip of her coffe, Verlok had downed half a glass of water in that time before he refilled it again. Someone was very thirsty it seemed.

Tess looked around at all the officers gathered before she began to speak. "Thank you all for attending this meeting. The occasion is not something common for us, but diplomatic encounters will probably be more frequent in the future, they are actually something we are looking for. So I would like to take the opportunity here to prepare you all for this task in the best possible way. I'm sure diplomatic procedures and etiquette were part of your training at the Academy. But practice is often different from theory."

"The Romulan Ambassador Virahk Jarok is on his way to meet the Amalthea. With him comes his aide, Rhienn tr'Hei. The Romulan Embassy was established on Katra about six months ago. Part of the ambassador's mission seems to be to give any Romulan here in the area, Starfleet member or not, the opportunity to speak out. There is a Romulan community on Katra, given the station's remote location it might be rather surprising, and it has grown quickly. Since part of the Romulan civilian population along with their related officers," she looked to Lared and Tordel and Darek tr'Hava, who also attended the meeting, "a new Romulan officer," she looked to Rojol, "and eventually the First Officer of the Amalthea are now stationed on this ship, Ambassador Jarok wants to visit."

Tess was silent for a moment to let what had been said sink in. "Although the main focus will be on our Romulan officers and their respective families, I don't want to give the impression that everyone else can relax." She grinned a bit to take some of the perceived edge off the words. "We will grant the ambassador all the privileges that are due to his position. There will be a reception. All persons now present, I ask you to attend. The department heads I ask to prepare themselves and their department to give the Ambassador a tour if he so desires."

She paused as she glanced about her officers before she turned her head to Rayek, silently giving the word to him.

Cmdr. Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck 5 - Briefing Room]

From his position at Tess' right hand side, Rayek quietly noted Tess' eye following and then lingering on the muffin tray set before Ensign Molane.  Despite his having made breakfast for them both that morning, Rayek did recognize that Tess hadn't eaten much, her morning meal interrupted by a colicky infant.  Fvienn was teething now and his normally calm mood was more often irritable from discomfort.  So while Tess spoke to the engineer and the s'Movels arrived, Rayek stood up from his seat and went to the replicator.  He ordered himself a Chai Latte and a large tray of assorted muffins and pastries.   The chai he kept as he returned to his seat.  The tray however was set in the middle of the table, with a number of napkins.   He placed one of Tess' favorites onto one such napkin and set it before her even as she began the meeting.   She could eat it while he talked afterwards.

"Help yourselves to the replicator for a drink if you wish." he offered to Romulan officers for whom this was their first time attending a briefing meeting on the Amalthea.  Cadet t'Movel while a bit subdued, obviously a bit wary as to why she'd been asked to attend along with her father and other Romulan crewmembers, looked about the room and its occupants in awe.  Rayek could almost see her envisioning a future where she too could be a senior office and sitting in a meeting room like this.   A smile crept onto Rayek's face.

Lared and Darek - a bit more seasoned officers (Lared perhaps not so much within Starfleet) were less awestruck and more cautious.  Yet as Tess spoke about the visit by Ambassador Jarok, the pieces seemed to come together for them and then relaxed a bit more into their seats.

Rayek sipped at his chai, noting how thorough Tess was at giving the brief.  Then it was his turn to speak.  Tess had suggested earlier that he might give an overview of Romulan politics in recent years.

"As I'm sure everyone is aware, in the aftermath of Hobus' destruction of the Romulan homeworld and Remus, the Romulan Star Empire was thrown into disarray with several political factions vying for control of what remained.   After 10 years, the most influential of factions as of Starfleet's last intelligence report packet received the day before the wormhole closed is the Romulan Free State which holds nearly 70% of the territory and is currently recognized by the Federation as being the leading body of the Romulan people.  Rebelling factions remain with Empress Sela and her supporters holding 25% of the former Empire's territory - mostly along the Garidian border having found recognition and support from that government.  Numerous smaller factions collectively make up the other 5% of the territory largely in a remote sector."

As Rayek described the political make up he had a map of the Romulan territory up on the holographic interface in the center of the table.

With a wave of his hand over the holographic controls, he changed images.  Now it showed rather young looking Romulan male in ambassadorial attire.

"Ambassador Virahk Jarok, the Romulan Free State ambassadorial representative, is the son of disgraced Romulan Admiral, Alidar Jarok.  Starfleet Intelligence has little actual information regarding Ambassador Jarok beyond his current assignment.  Thankfully, we do have information about his father that could be relevant.  In 2366, Admiral Jarok was leaked false information by the Romulan High Command about a planned offensive against the Federation to determine the man's loyalties.  Admiral Jarok was discovered to have passed along this information to the Captain of the Enterprise-D.  Rather than face execution by the Romulan Empire, the Admiral took his own life.   So it can be assumed that the stain of his disgrace followed the family until at least the destruction of the homeworld by Hobus when Virakh would have been just preparing to head into mandatory military service."

"That Jarok, as the son of a traitor, has been named Ambassador at such a young age hints at one of two possible scenarios.  One, that the Ambassador is exceptionally skilled in the field of diplomacy, striving to overcome the blackmark on his family and that the Free State has placed a high value on having a strong Romulan presence here in the Gamma Quadrant after learning that the Republic of Kahless and the Klingons Empire were intending to maintain embassies on Katra station.  Alternatively, this could be a test of the young Ambassador's own loyalties.  He could be placed on Katra as a scapegoat by the Romulan Free State officials who may see the embassy as having little value but who have to satisfy the public pressure of at least trying to keep up with the other major powers.  If the Embassy fails it can be attributed to the Ambassador's questionable lineage."
Rayek summed up.

Rayek waved his hand and a new image was called up of a slightly portly Romulan.  Something in the eyes of the man always struck Rayek as familiar but as yet Rayek hadn't been able to pin down why.

"This is Rhienn tr'Hei.  He is reported to be Ambassador Jarok's assistant and his Starfleet Intelligence file is even more empty than that of the Ambassador.  The s’Hei clan was a minor family before Hobus and it is likely it has remained such after Hobus.  I had put in a request for SI to look deeper into the man’s affiliations and check more into the details provided but at the time of the wormhole closing I had yet to receive word back.  While I have no proof to back my suspicion, I suspect the man is acting as the Ambassador's bodyguard and quite possibly his watchdog to ensure that Jarok doesn't have his father's loyalties."

Rayek suspected this because that was exactly his role some 7 years earlier with Ambassador Kalavak in the aftermath of Hobus.   It made Rayek exceedingly nervous to think that if rumors of the Tal’Shiar backing the Free State were true, then a member of the Tal'Shiar might be coming aboard his ship in the guise of this Ambassador's assistant.

He wondered how much influence the broken organization might have grown in the years since he defected?

In the brief time that he and Tess had been still been stationed on Katra while the Ambassador and entourage had been present, Rayek had been hyper vigilant with keeping himself and his family away from the Romulan Embassy or having security in attendance whenever Tess had to meet with them for diplomatic reasons.   It had been a relief to be assigned to a ship that would take them away from the danger he felt lurking around every corner.

”We don’t know if there are any hidden agendas associated with this Ambassadorial visit but it would not be unlikely. ”

He turned to look to the assembled Romulan Starfleet officers.  He wondered if they felt distrusted now that they had been singled out to meet with the Ambassador?  The s’Movels, Rayek trusted, even with the care of his child.  Though they had remained loyal to the Empire until its fall, Rayek knew they had come to Katra honestly as refugees.  He could not see them intending to betray those who had taken them in.  Even Karinne for all her grousing and complaints, he doubted would do anything to risk her grandchildren’s bright future within the Federation.

“When meeting with the Ambassador be mindful at all times that though you and your families have been selected to meet with the Ambassador that you do have the right to refuse if you feel unsafe or persecuted.  You are members of Starfleet and Federation now and as all people, are deserving of respect not intimidation.”

His eyes traveled next to his Bolian second in security as she stood in watchful guard over the meeting.  ”Ensign Loxis, please ensure security for both the visiting Ambassador and the Amalthea’s Romulan and Reman crew and families are tightened.”  He looked over to Tess grateful that she was permitting him to take these protective measures.

Rayek then closed his visuals and looked over to the others seated at the table.  ”Are there any questions?”

USS Amalthea - Briefing Room

The briefing about Romulan politics was somewhat interesting, but mostly academic, as far as Mas was concerned.  The current situation in the quadrant cut the Romulans off from their places of power even more than the Federation had been.  The Romulans had no colonies here, no shipyards, and perhaps only one ship.   Which meant that whatever their political intrigues, the passengers and crew of the Amalthea had little to fear from them.

Mas found himself with his mouth full when the Captain asked for questions, and hastily took a drink of juice to wash down the muffin.

For Mas, there was only one piece of information that interested him:  "What kind of ship are they bringing?"  And though he did not speak the follow-up out loud, he thought, 'And will they let us tour it?'

Probably not.

Romulans were a fairly secretive people.

[USS Amalthea - Briefing room]

When the Captain was explaining and mentioning a new officer he actually looked behind him, then next to him to see who she was talking about. Then he realized it was him. He was not naive but he had not considered him an officer. Ensign was not a rank of officer in his book. He had to be a higher rank which he had wanted to work for. He blushed and nodded his head. “Thank you,” he replied softly.

Funny how one person gets food from one individual and not the other. However it seemed the Commander had the right to get food for everyone and told everyone they could have a drink. If he was brown noser he would have got food for everyone and then offer a solo muffin to the one he liked. To him that would be a good character mark for leadership.

Having Cadet t'Movel at the meeting had Rojol feel a little light hearted and his heart beat against his chest. He had a liking for her. He had wanted to hand her a muffin to show he had liked her. Then he felt with so many eyes would be an awkward moment for him and her. He did give her a glance to show he is not ignoring her. That was one play one has to play. Ignoring them was a sign you
don’t like them.

Anyways he was not planning to have food from the one who was a traitor. That is what he believed because Rayek had joined Starfleet before the destruction of their planet. Rojol was there when he was a child. He could have had information wrong, but he was there being rushed to escape from the disaster. He lost his home. Which made him feel bitter. The truth was Rojol really does not know about Rayek.

The map showed that Romulan had a nice long line like a wall dividing space. That was good and bad. For tactics it was bad if being attacked front and back, but territory was a good size for now.

Family Jarok that name he knew because it was taught in Romulan school how he had betrayed the Empire. A disgrace. A traitor! Sadly the family relatives are tainted with a poor action as Jarok! The reason possible to keep you in line. When one decides to do something dramatic like telling Starfleet information. The thought of betrayal is like losing wealth, or business to your family. To make a traitor choice would be selfish and greedy. That kind of government limits freedom to the citizens but a fist to control them.

The Assistant seemed lacking bodyguard qualifications as his chubby size. That's what Rojol thought. The Romulan was like him. His hair was not black like other Romulans.

Having a traitor mark Commander. An Ambassador son’s traitor who was going to Katra. He did a small quiet snort. They are all traitors! He had wondered where the Romulans were going in the future? He had to gain more history, politics and much as he could. There was much work. He was thinking the old Empire was long gone and it was lost. There had to be some loyal members out there. He could only imagine Karinne t'Movel could possibly be the only woman who knows. He will need to seek her out. Befriend her. Perhaps she can aid him in that direction. He had to gain her trust. Wearing the old Empire uniform at that party showed where his heart was with Romulan. When he has Starfleet uniform she has that tone that makes you feel you are not worth being in her presence. He truly wants to gain her trust. To know her. Then he will know more.

After Mas asked what kind of ship they are using was a good question. He had waited for an answer before he asked his questions. “Why would we feel we are being prosecuted? What was taken from us is taken from us?” he said coldly. He had his arms across his chest. He had wanted to say he was serving in Starfleet, the military who had failed to help Romulans! It was Starfleet who should be prosecuted!

[USS Amalthea - Deck 5 - Briefing Room]

One might ask themselves why Tess, if she was so hungry, had not taken something to eat from the replicator along with her beverage so that Rayek now went and got something for her now. Fact was, Tess was one of those people who under certain circumstances tended to forget to eat. With her role as Captain those circumstances occurred more often than before that. Only when her eyes had caught sight of the delicious looking muffins Ora had brought for Mas did the feeling of hunger kick in, since she didn't have had much time to eat this morning.

While Tess then listend to Mas answering her question, she found Rayek placing one of the muffins he had replicated for all right in front of her. She cast him a thankful smile before turning her attention back on the Lurian.

The muffin remained untouched by her during her briefing to the crew. Only when she gave word to Rayek, did she eye the glorious tiny cake in front of her. It had dark and white choclatechips in it and juicy cranberries. Tugging lightly at the napkin the muffin was sitting on, Tess pulled it closer to her and tore off a small piece of it and popped it into her mouth. So delicious!

Tess couldn't help but cringe a little during Rayek's briefing. His choice of words were very much tinted by a Romulan perspective on both the Romulan Ambassador and also his father, using words like 'traitor' and emphasizing the disgrace the name Jarok was viewed among the Romulan people. She realized Rayek did this since it was very likely that the Romulan officers here had that very perspective on them or at least had encountered it. By Starfleet, Admiral Jarok's act of courage and his sacrifice was noted as commendable. She was a little worried that the Romulan officers might take a dismissive or even hostile stance toward the Ambassador since it was pointed out that they should not let themselves being intimidated by the Ambassador or his aide. She thought Rayek got a little carried away there by his own - admittedly valid - fears, but it should not be the general idea of the Ambassador's visit, she thought.

"Thank you, Commander", Tess thanked him for his thorough report. "It's a diplomatic encounter. And we may expect both Ambassador Jarok and his aide to stick to diplomatic conventions for this encounter. It might be a small but important step to not only a peaceful but amiable relationship between the Federation and the Romulan Free State." Tess was the optimist. And she wanted to carry that to her crew.

Tess looked over to Mas when he posed his question about the ship the Ambassador would arrive with. There seemed to be a hint of excitement and curiosity in the Lurian's voice as he asked that. "It is a Vreenak Class Courier ship", Tess replied. Normally, technical specs were not her strong suit and thus had a hard time memorizing such details, but she remembered that distinctively because of the role it had played about six months ago when they faced a near invasion of the Gregari and the Ambassadorial ship was helping evacuate Katra.
She picked up her PADD and scrolled through it for a moment. "I have the specs here, if you are interested in them", she said and sent an excerpt of the data entry to Mas, and everyone else attending here.

While she sent the data around, Ensign Takima spoke up. Tess looked up from her PADD to give him her attention. She was not quite sure what he was referring to with his comment, but she hoped she could ease any concerns he might have. His posture seemed rather defensive. "You are right. There is no need to feel persecuted. It's a diplomatic meet-up."

She looked around, leaving time for more officers to speak up.
