S1M1 "To Boldly Go ..."

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Bridge]

Tess took a seat in the captain's seat.

She still couldn't quite believe it. Serving in Starfleet had always meant having to deal with rapidly changing circumstances. She had experienced that herself several times. But this was by far the biggest change she had to face. Not that she minded. When she had been informed that she was up for the captain's spot, she recognized the confidence and recognition in it. Sure, it was also due to the special circumstances, but in the end, what did it matter?

The last 27 hours had been emotional. It meant saying goodbye to many dear colleagues. First and foremost her Captain, Solluk. But also from Saqa7, Beja and Hrafn. And from John. She was sad that they never had the opportunity to introduce Fvienn to him. But she was overjoyed that he had accepted their request for him to be their son's godfather. It would only be by transmissions that they could see each other, or when they returned to Katra for resupply. But it would still be worth it.

Tess looked to Rayek, her husb-no. Her First Officer. Tess was glad that she had been approved to name Rayek as her First Officer, not only approved but it had been suggested to her. It would have been quite impossible for her to accept the position if it meant that Rayek, and possibly Fvienn, would be separated from her.
She had had a conversation with Rayek before they had left for the Amalthea. It was likely that as a married couple in the ship's command ranks they would be closely eyed by the crew. Although she wanted a companionable atmosphere on the ship, they would have to watch closely to make sure they remained and appeared professional.

"What's our status?", she asked him, unable to suppress the excited grin. She glanced around the bridge. There were still a few officers missing up here. But she was sure it wouldn't be too much longer before they were off.

Off to a time full of adventure.

USS Amalthea - Engine Room

The turbolift door opened, granting a view down the hall to the shining, pristine engine room of the USS Amalthea.  Mas had seen quite a bit of the ship over the past few weeks, and the Engine Room in particular.  Upon graduating from Starfleet Academy, he had been immediately assigned to this ship and given the daunting task of overseeing the Engineering department while the vessel underwent a refit of its shield and EPS systems.

As a newly minted Ensign, it was much more responsibility than he probably should have been given.  Someone at Starfleet Command had apparently decided that a ship full of fresh graduates could manage the task.  Perhaps they were right, but the process had made Mas very uneasy.  Fortunately, he'd had ample and capable help from the Katra drydock crew.  Any time Mas hesitated, or had a question, they were there to patiently and competently explain a process to him.

But now, the drydock crew was gone.  Suddenly, this engine room was his responsibility.

He was not alone in this predicament.

A short time ago, Mas had watched Captain t'Lhoell and her husband, Commander tr'Lhoell, accept their assignment to the Amalthea.  To his knowledge, they were the only experienced officers on the entire ship.  Everyone else he'd met in the ship's complement was either an Ensign or even a Cadet.  Originally, experienced department heads had been meant to come in from the Alpha Quadrant via the Bajoran wormhole.  But the Thinkers had managed to close the wormhole, using some advanced technology that Mas didn't fully understand.

So, the crew were now cut off, on their own, with no one to bring them up to speed.

In his second year at the Academy, Mas had read about the USS Valiant.  It was a state-of-the-art escort vessel deployed during the Dominion war.  The ship had been crewed almost entirely by cadets, and given the simple mission of conducting a training cruise.  Then, they'd lost their Captain.  The following months of their lives had been a story of increasing stress and desperation which culminated in the destruction of the ship and the loss of nearly everyone aboard her.

Hopefully, the Amalthea had a better fate in store.

Well, there was no point crying about it.  The Amalthea officers and crew were being pushed off of a cliff, to see if they would fly or fall.

Mas intended to fly.

He stopped in front of the ship's twin warp cores.  The Luna Class wasn't the first ship to sport multiple cores.  Generations ago, there had been multi-core ships, and even ships with multiple nacelle pairs.  Each of those vessels had smoothed out the engineering challenges by degrees, overcoming the dangers and obstacles that came with any emerging technology.  From time to time, it seemed that the innovation of multiple cores might be abandoned, but each time, Starfleet's corps of engineers had risen to the challenge and tried again.  By the time the Luna class had soared out of its shipyards, the process had been perfected.  The ship's twin cores provided both redundancy and power benefits, at the cost of a small amount of additional complexity.

Now these cores were his to maintain.

It seemed like too much power for one man...  Not that Mas was eager to surrender his new responsibility.  No matter the anxiety that came from being in charge of such an important department, it was also a source of pride.  Few Lurians ever left the Ionite Nebula.  Fewer still served in Starfleet.  The dreams of his youth had been realized.  Here he was, with a starship's power and propulsion system at his fingertips.

He checked one display, then the next.  He nodded to a cadet who handed him a PADD which contained the latest diagnostic reports.

The cadet called him 'Sir.'

Mas was a 'Sir,' now.

Looking over the figures, Mas went to a console and touched an icon.

=/\= Ensign Molane reporting to the Bridge from Main Engineering.  All systems are ready and showing optimal. =/\=

Of course, that optimal condition was due more to the efforts of Cat Goodspeed's drydock crew than anything Mas had done.  But he would be the one to keep it together, in tip-top condition.  From the moment the drydock crew had left the ship, all responsibility had become his.

He vowed to be worthy of it.

=/\= Thrusters, Impulse, and Warp Drive are ready at your command.  =/\=

<USS Amalthea - Bridge>

It was not unusual to be here so early, but this was so even for Ensign Verlok, Science Officer. Indeed, he had been present on the Bridge even before the previous duty shift had ended, which had drawn some indignant - yet ignored - glances from his peers (figurative peers of course; certainly not literally!) as he co-opted an auxiliary console and began his own duties well ahead of the required, acceptable timescales. Which often meant completing some work for the current shift, such was their interminable progress.

He stifled a sigh.

Ensign. Science Officer. Not Chief, but rather a junior adjunct to another whose appointment to the senior role was purely through happenchance of simple time in service, and not actual aptitude.

To Verlok, this was nothing short of being iniquitous, and he was sure there was another hand in it somewhere. The Romulan First Officer, perhaps? They were not renowned for their presence of mind, after all.

Or perhaps 'The Human' had somehow manipulated events to be contrary to his perquisite.

The name - the only name he would permit to address this individual in question - sent an almost non-Vulcan retch from his throat to his stomach. After all this time, the Human that had been contributory to his...past ignominy, and it was only through the notion that this..creature...was elsewhere that his recuperation and rehabilitation was possible.

And yet, despite the unfathomable calculations of probabilities, here he was, sharing a starship with the one sentient in the known universe that he did not wish to be around. He only wished he need not require medical intervention, such was the Department the Human worked within.

As hours ticked away, Verlok finally watched, impassively, as the shifts changed. And at the opportune moment, switched stations to ensure the most optimum Science position. He raised an eyebrow to himself at the subsidiary supremacy this action achieved.

This expression of immense self-confidence continued as Captain t'Lhoell and Commander tr'Lhoell entered the Bridge. Caring not if it looked as if he was currying favour, Verlok stood from his seat in reception, throwing only the most momentary of glances to the Commander before settling upon the Captain, and ready to answer for the Science Department should the ship's state-of-the-art sensor potentiality be called upon.

<USS Amalthea - Bridge>

From the first moment that he'd been informed of not just Tess' promotion, but his own, things had been happening a what seemed like warp speed.   A new ship assignment with a vital mission - to seek a means of re-opening the wormhole.  The decision of what to do in regards to their family.  It wouldn't be unheard of to foster Fvienn to another to look after in their absence but Rayek knew from experience that what might be anticipated to be a one-week journey could turn out to be much longer.   So, he had advocated for bringing Fvienn aboard despite the potential danger they could face.  To address this, he suggested moving their private quarters mid-ship from Deck 6 to Deck 8 close to the structurally protected area around the Medbay.

The issue of childcare while they were on duty or on call day or night was addressed when Rayek suggested to the s'Movel family that the recent Academy (challenged exam) graduate - Ensign Lared tr'Movel, and his daughter as a Cadet could be assigned to the ship and the entire s'Movel family moved along with.  Phara could continue to provide childcare for Fvienn, while Karinne looked after the older s'Movel children.  In the event of a Red Alert, the entire non-Starfleet family members could take shelter with Fvienn.  He thought it a workable solution and Tess had agreed enough to allow him to requisition the s'Movel assignments.   The pair had arrived with the last batch of transfers just the other day.  So now with their crew all present the ship was ready to go.

Rayek was so proud of Tess.  She had accomplished great things in such a short amount of time. He was looking forward to working alongside her as her 'Number One'.  Suddenly, that phrase didn't seem so bothersome anymore - though he did prefer her pet name for him - 'ciccino.'  However, as much as he preferred the more romantic appellation, he had agreed when she brought up the necessity of being professional while on duty.  So, no calling Tess e'lev on the bridge - well, not when it was manned at any rate.

Now, though as he stepped onto the bridge alongside his wife, he was content.  He felt he was where he was meant to be.    While Tess moved to the command chair, Rayek paced a circuit around the bridge ensuring that that the assembled bridge crew were focused on their task of readying to launch from the station.  Tess' question prompted many of the bridge crew to recheck their stations before reporting out.

The ensign in charge of Engineering, who was listening in via a direct line called in.   A Lurian if he recalled from his review of the crew manifest.

Ensign tr'Movel called out that Flight was ready.  Lared tr'Movel had been up until recently, one of the refugee Romulans that the Federation had set up here on the frontier.  He had started a salvage business on the station but had been undercut by a Pakled competitor and had run his company into bankrupcy.  Rather than live off the charity of the Federation, the man called on the only other lawful skill he had. His Star Navy training - every Romulan had to serve 5 years in some manner of military.  Lared had been a pilot - and so had recently traveled to New Bajor and challenged the Academy exam.

Next to speak was Cadet Tordel t'Movel, Lared's daughter.  It was unusual for a 1st year Cadet to be assigned a ship but assurances were made that she would keep up with - if not surpass her fellow Academy peers. Tordel, who was manning Ops alongside the borrowed Ensign Ricci.  Ricci was on loan from Katra to one-on-one train Tordel until the Cadet had a full understanding of her position.

Rayek waited a long moment expecting to hear calls from Tactical, Science and Medical.. but all were silent.  Medical, of course, would be, his nemesis, Padrini.  So, it was not surprising to Rayek that the man was delaying his report, and underhand way of making Rayek seem incompetent at his job.  As for the Science position, Rayek had initially expected to see Tess' father Fabiano at the science station - but earlier Fabiano had messaged both him and the Alpha shift that he would be overseeing the setup of a 'proper lab' and named as his assistant on the bridge to be Ensign Verlok.   Rayek looked over towards the Vulcan and stifled his immediate dislike of the man.

'Give him a chance - they aren't all bad.'  Rayek had long held a bias against Vulcans, despite his calling Solluk 'brother' and becoming almost friends with Sultan, Katra's local jeweler.  For every one that Rayek viewed as tolerable, there were over a dozen whose logical and emotionless personalities disturbed Rayek's paranoid nature making him more prone to harsher assessments of them.  In the past he'd find ways of justifying transfers off Katra or to roles where he didn't need to encounter them.  Perhaps with Verlok, that wouldn't be necessary.

"Science - status report" Rayek called out. Then tapped his comm badge.

=/\= "tr'Lhoell to Medbay - status report." =/\=

He then looked over to Tactical expectantly.

USS Amalthea - Bridge - Tactical

The USS Amalthea was commissioned in 2380. It was a Luna Class Long-Range Explorer. Even though Ora had not been on the ship for long, she knew it backwards and forwards. From the time she had been told of her assignment on the Amalthea under Captain t’Lhoell, Ora had made sure to know the specs and blueprints of the vessel. If she was going to be part of security and keeping the crew safe from whatever unknown they may come across, she had to know exactly where everything was like the blue ridges on her bald head.

The situation was unusual, being cut off from Starfleet. They WERE Starfleet. They had to maintain the order that the Federation held to. Ora was confident that they would be successful in their mission. They would find the technology required in order to open up the wormhole again, and be united with the Fleet. This embarking into the unknown was full of danger and peril, but Ora knew that the crew would need to work together and keep their standards high in order to overcome their enemies.

Discipline was the key, to keep fear away. No time to spare for trivial things. Ora glanced down at the computer consoles at the tactical station. She glanced up and made eye contact with her immediate superior officer, Commander tr’Lhoell, and reported in, “Commander, tactical is ready. Everything is clear here.”

Rayek's glance over toward Tactical where sat the Bolian new ensign that he'd selected to be his Assistant Chief.  Given that the entire Sec/Tac department was made up of newly graduated Ensigns with little to no actual combat experience, it had been necessary for Rayek to sift through their Academy records reading their instructor's assessments all in order to make his selection of Assistant Chief.   Something about the Bolian had stood out to Rayek in his review of her file, so trusting his instinct he'd assigned her the position.   Over the course of this first mission he would be testing her to ensure he'd made the right choice.

Rayek nodded his acknowledgement of her report.  "Thank you, Ensign Loxis.  Once we launch and are clear of the system's oort cloud, I want your assistance in reviewing current team set-ups.  Your knowledge of your academy peers will be useful in ensuring the teams are balanced with skills and abilities."

On the Amalthea, all security personnel were assigned in pairs to cover off watches in key locations, or to perform roving patrols around sensitive sections of the ship.   In addition, every 3 pairs were assigned a Security Team designation (Alpha Team One, Bravo Team One etc.) that could be called on at a moments notice to come together and work together to go on Away Missions or be used to repel boarders in concert.  Yet currently those pairs and those Security Teams were randomly selected - supposedly to make things fair.   Fairness, could get people killed.  Rayek intended to ensure his department - no... his ship's crew, had the best chance of survival when it came down to any hostile situation the ship might encounter.  And if was certain that at some point they would encounter something.

"In addition, we will set up Security drills to be run starting first thing tomorrow.  You will assist me in overseeing that."

Afterwards, Rayek moved to take a seat beside Tess.  Her grin was beautiful to behold.  Her excitement at the start of this new chapter in their lives was infectious and he smiled back towards her.

"Just waiting on two departments to confirm readiness, Captain."

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Bridge]

While the status reports came in, Tess couldn't help but notice the difference in how she felt. She remembered the first time Captain Solluk had sent her out with Healy, leaving command to her over the ship for the first time. She had been so nervous, she was sure the whole bridge crew had noticed it. Back then, the thought of commanding a ship permanently for such an extended mission would have been horrible for her.

But now, she felt nothing of all that. She felt excitement and yes, more confidence.

She seemed to only now really understand what a great development she had gone through. Solluk had contributed significantly to this by repeatedly showing his trust in her and introducing her to larger tasks in which she could grow steadily. And, of course, she owed a great deal to her husband Rayek. He had always supported her, encouraged her and helped her in word and deed.

Now a new phase in her life began. Just a few months ago, her life had changed a lot with the birth of her first child. It was a time of change and new beginnings. Tess saw a good sign in all this and she was positive. To emphasize this new beginning a little, she had even cut off her hair. She had simply felt like it. In her youth, she had been experimental about her hair color. But she had always had long hair. Now it was shoulder-length and she liked it.

Tess followed the conversation between Rayek and Ensign Ora Loxis, the Bolian. Like 99% of the crew of this ship, she was a newly appointed officer. So was the Vulcan Verlok, who had stood up when she had had entered with Rayek and who had turned to her in apparent anticipation. Tess smiled at him, about to ask for the status of the science station, Rayek, however, was quicker to ask. "I'm glad to have you aboard, Ensign," Tess said.

When Rayek returned and sat down beside her, she glanced over at him. She nodded when he reported that there were still two departments that needed to report their status. As if on cue, a call came in.

=/\= "Lt. Padrini to Captain t'Lhoell. Medical reports ready." =/\=

Of course, Tess was aware that Rayek was not thrilled that she had allowed Padrini to come aboard. Even more so as Chief Medical Officer. Roberto had asked for his transfer to the Amalthea, and Tess couldn't deny that her own choice for the CMO position probably would have been the Italian. All the private stuff aside, Roberto was an excellent medic. And in her opinion, he had what it took to become a senior officer.

She registered that he now reported directly to her, instead of to Rayek as First Officer or addressed to the bridge in general, but she didn't want to read any intent into it. Yet the likelihood was that it was just that after all. She looked to Rayek, clearly not making any move to acknowledge his call but letting Rayek do it, since it had been him after all who had asked for a status report.

Then, when they had the green light from Ensign Verlok, Tess' pulse quickened a bit, because that meant they were about to depart, finally.

"Ensign t'Movel, let Katra Ops know we're good to go."

"We have a green light, Captain", the Romulan said.

=/\= "Engineering, standby to go to warp speed, factor 5 through the Oort Cloud and warp 8 once we're clear of it." =/\=

She nodded over to the Romulan Ensign Tess had gotten know as the salvager on Katra. Now he was a Flight Officer on her ship. "Mr. tr'Movel, bring us away from the station at impulse until we reach the Oort cloud. Plot course to the Atros System."

She leaned back in the Captain's seat, back straight, her arms resting on the arm rests as she looked stright ahead on the view screen as the ship started to move away from Katra and towards the first adventure of their journey.

"Steady as she goes."

<USS Amalthea - Bridge>

"Science - status report" Rayek called out. Then tapped his comm badge.[/size]

At Commander tr'Lhoell's supplication, Verlok understood that he continued to be the Science Department representative on the Bridge. Lt Moreno had yet to return from primary sensor calibrations, which - given its importance, even he couldn't criticise. Thus, at the prompt, Verlok - like liquid metal - slid back in his seat, swinging around to the console in the most efficient manner conceivable, and called up the Science functions most critical to departure. "Gamma ray scanner: online. Myographic scanner: online. Neutron densitometer: online. Exo-particle sensors: online. Subspace flux detectors: online. Graviton telescope: online. Magneton sensors: online. Library computer connectivity: established."

He swung back in this chair towards the senior officers. "Science reports ready."

Then, with eyes barely betraying the heady anticipation of exploration, Verlok watched as the starfield on the viewscreen began to slide forwards as the Amalthea began her critical mission.

USS Amalthea - Engine Room

=/\= "Engineering, standby to go to warp speed, factor 5 through the Oort Cloud and warp 8 once we're clear of it." =/\=

Mas nodded- a subconscious gesture.  =/\= Understood.  We'll be ready. =/\=

As he closed the channel, Cadet Vrix walked up to him.

"Sir, we're not ready."

Mas' eyes widened as he regarded the cadet.  "What do you mean we're not ready?"

"There's a phase variance between the cores," the Trill explained, "It just started, and I can't figure out what's causing it."

Mas quickly marched over to the core management console, glancing over the details.  Then he tapped some diagnostic control icons.  "What?  Why-?"

The Cadet was right.  The cores had fallen out of alignment, but he could see no reason for it.  He called out, "Everyone!  Hear Me!  Did anyone just do anything?  About two minutes ago?"

Ensign T'pan stepped forward.  "Sir.  I just completed diagnostics on the EPS Flow Distribution Hub."

Mas nodded, "Yes, I just read the results.  Everything nominal..."  He considered that for a moment.  "did you return the B-layer cap to its working position?"

The Ensign's mouth downturned almost imperceptibly.  "... I did not, Sir."

Mas relaxed.  "Re-open the access panel and re-seat the cap."

She nodded, "Yes, Sir," and she scurried off to make the adjustment.  Momentarily, she returned, "The cap is re-seated, Sir.  My apologies for the error."

Mas eyed the diagnostic screen, seeing the synchronization issues correcting themselves.

"Errors will happen.  What is important is that we have no pride or ego about admitting them.  I found it valuable that you reported your work on the unit immediately and without hesitation.  Then, you readily admitted the error."  He raised his voice again, "This is how I want everyone in this department to behave."

He smiled slightly, adding in a more conversational tone, "I made the same mistake during an Academy examination, which is the only reason I thought to check.  You may recall that the USS Aquila also has a dual warp-core configuration, with a similar Distribution hub.  I left the cap off, and it caused a series of seemingly inexplicable harmonization problems which resulted in me failing the entire exam.  This is the only reason it occurred to me to ask."

He wanted to reach out and pat her on the back reassuringly, but decided against it.  Some cultures frowned on physical contact, and he was pretty sure the Vulcan culture was one of them.  Instead, he simply returned his attention to the diagnostic display as he waited for the order to go to warp.

Cmdr Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck 4 - Bridge]

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Bridge]

When Rayek returned and sat down beside her, she glanced over at him. She nodded when he reported that there were still two departments that needed to report their status. As if on cue, a call came in.

=/\= "Lt. Padrini to Captain t'Lhoell. Medical reports ready." =/\=

Rayek listened to Padrini over the comm, responding to Rayek's request for a status report -    calling in from the Medbay.  Yet though the doctor's response answered his request, it was not directed to him, but to Tess.   The Romulan's expression twitched briefly in annoyance at the man's subtle rebuff.   There was a moment of silence afterward, a moment of expectation that Tess would respond.  Yet she kept her words to herself and merely looked to him... waiting.

She was allowing him to answer, to show to Padrini and others, that they expected the Chain of Command to be followed, irregardless of any personal dislikes.  Rayek nodded in understanding, before speaking.  =/\= "Thank you, Dr. Padrini for your report." =/\=

Rayek then tapped behind his right ear, activating the 'silent-mode' on his surgically inserted comm. He lowered his head slightly and covered his face with his hand to discreetly mouth the rest of his response.  If Padrini was somewhere public on his end of this disciplinary speech - it was Padrini's own fault.

~ =/\= Let me speak plain so things are clear between us, Lieutenant.  I will not remind you again about respecting the chain of command.  If this continues, it will be permanently noted on your service file and my recommendation to the Captain will be to replace you and have you transferred to New Bajor. Understood, Lieutenant? Do not make the mistake of thinking Tess will ever choose you over me." =/\= ~

Rather than listen to the man sputter his indignation at his words, Rayek cut the comm.   And then turned his attention the Vulcan who was giving his report.

<USS Amalthea - Bridge>

The Vulcan's status report was as expected.  Dry and emotionless. "Thank you, Ensign."  Rayek turned to Tess.  "The ship and crew are ready, Captain."

[Enroute to Atros] (leaving the Oort cloud)

Rayek had waited until the ship made it past the the Oort cloud and jumped to higher warp before moving on to the next task on his list.

"Captain, with your permission, I'll begin preparing for a Mission Briefing.  I suspect you will want to meet with the ship's Department Heads to go over our mission goals and assign out specific tasks in preparation.  Does in one hour work for you?" he inquired.

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck 4 - Bridge]

Cmdr Rayek tr'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck 4 - Bridge]

Rather than listen to the man sputter his indignation at his words, Rayek cut the comm.   And then turned his attention the Vulcan who was giving his report.

Tess couldn't pick up what Rayek was saying to Roberto in private (as private as it was possible on the manned bridge). The newly promoted doctor kept taking jibes at Rayek. That was not okay. In this moment, she doubted her decision to let Padrini come on board. At her next meeting with her First Officer, she would talk to Rayek about it again.

As the ship glided through the Oort cloud, Tess opened a ship-wide channel. To begin their mission, she wanted to say a few words to her young crew.

=/\= "Crew of the Amalthea, this is the Captain. We have begun our journey. We are tasked with helping to reopen the wormhole. And to further explore the Gamma Quadrant. We have come together under very special and certainly anything but ordinary circumstances. We are a young team, inexperienced perhaps, but no less capable for that. No less inventive. No less successful.

I want you to know that I have complete confidence in each and every one of you. There is no room for self-doubt on this ship. But plenty of room for determination, self-confidence and team spirit. This ship has been under excellent leadership with a brilliant team for a good 20 years. I want the Amalthea and her crew to continue to be known for just that. For my part, I have no doubt that I can achieve that with you.

Always keep that in mind if something or someone ever makes you doubtful about that.

Captain out."

<USS Amalthea - Bridge>

Verlok's keen hearing couldn't help but pick up the serendipitously captured words from Commander tr'Lhoell; well, partly inadvertently, but also because the first few words piqued his curiosity to the extent he assigned a spare portion of his not inconsiderable faculties to listening in.

Face to his console, he raised an eyebrow. The First Officer clearly had some contention with Dr Padrini, largely over protocol. But, there was an emotion in the voice that strayed from the path of professionalism and far into the realms of emotion.

This conclusion was brought to its logical affirmination as the Commander delivered his final edict. So, Dr Padrini had - as the Humans were wont to call it - 'designs' on Captain t'Lhoell.

Fascinating. It would seem the Amalthea would be a Petri dish of study into the manifest benefits of Kolinahr.

With the communication with Sickbay now complete, Verlok used the moment to gave his report his Department's readiness, after which Commander tr'Lhoell took the time from his matters of critical impoirt to acknowlrdge such.

And yet. In the midst of this microcosm of chaotic, inefficient behaviour, the Captain delivered what amounted to a rousing speech to a crew this clearly required some positive reinforcement to their nascent capabilities.

Yes, this ship would provide ample opportunities for study.

USS Amalthea - Bridge - Tactical to the Brief Meeting

Ora nodded her head briskly at Commander tr’Lhoell, when he gave his next orders to her. Good to see her superior and her were of the same mind. She had already made a list of the security crew, and drew up positions that would work best with their skills she had seen at the academy and in their files. The ship had only themselves to rely on, there would be no one to call for help when things went sideways. Oh and Ora knew they would go sideways, it was inevitable and statistically improbable for it not to go all wrong. She had done up the numbers.

Ora already had her report ready to go with her recommendations for the teams set up, she had made sure that each grouping had a balance of skills and talents. The biggest issue she saw was going to be getting them to work together in tandem. That normally took time for a team to learn each other, to learn to rely on the other, and to gain the trust of the others. None of them had that kind of luxury afforded to them, they would just have to blindly trust and hopefully grow stronger with each victory they gained in the Gamma Quadrant.

Oh, and there would be victories. Failure was not an option to them. The only option they had was to win, even if it was a millimeter at a time.

I look forward to assisting with the drills, sir,” Ora looked forward to the chance to not just get more training in, but also she was quite intrigued to see what the commander could teach them all. Commander tr’Lhoell had quite the reputation amongst the security crew. They had heard some interesting tidbits from the Katra crew they had the short time of meeting.

Ora wasn’t a gossip, she didn’t care about such things. But she knew that any security crew had to have their ridges to the ground, and know what the topics of the day were amongst the people. They could not let themselves be taken unaware, or have any situation surprise them. If there was some kind of issue going on, they had to be proactive to it, not reactive to it.

Ora finished up the editing of her report, and pretended not to hear the clear insbordation that the Medical Chief displayed to everyone on the channel to the Commander. She was confident that the Commander would deal with it, as was his responsibility to. But she made a note though to look more into this Padrini’s background.

Just who was he? Could he be a spy? An agent for their enemies? The Dominion had used their changelings for that at one time. Perhaps Padrinin is one of their spies, sent on their ship to sabotage their attempts at getting the wormhole open again. Or it could be one of the Thinker synthetic people they had used to infiltrate Katra some months ago.

Ora would need to find a way to take a blood sample of Padrini to confirm if he was one or not. A plan formed in her mind, as she would not allow the safety of the crew to be put at such risk. Yet, she knew that chain of command, and couldn’t out right accuse the Medical Chief without proof, so proof she would get.

Ora was early to the Department Head meeting. She stood at attention in the back of the room. She knew most of the people here. To think how quickly things had changed for them all. Just a couple of days ago, they were fellow students at Starfleet academy on New Bajor, and now they were heads of departments, sent on a mission that could bring the destruction of Starfleet if they did not succeed.

Ora looked around at each one in the room, solemnly in her head judging if each one was capable of the heavy burden they carried on their shoulders now. Would they be able to uphold the laws and morals of the Federation? Would they live up to their pips? Or would they have to have their pips removed and air locked? Time was the variable that held those answers.

USS Amalthea, Briefing Room

Mas waited in anxious anticipation as the ship climbed through the warp factors.

He half-expected something to go wrong, even though he'd checked everything twice.  But, no.  Other than that one mishap with the EPS Flow Distribution Hub, everything went smoothly.  This was a well-maintained ship, which had once enjoyed the services of a well-trained and experienced crew.

Mas supposed the crew was still well-trained.  But experienced?  There were some things school couldn't teach.  He felt that deficiency inside of himself.  That self-doubt.

But he remembered the inspiring words of the Captain:  'inexperienced perhaps, but no less capable for that. No less inventive. No less successful.'

They'd figure it out.  They'd be creative.  They'd be nimble.

Yes, of course they'd make mistakes.  But they'd persevere and succeed anyway.

They were Starfleet.

He smiled, his anxieties lifted away by the confidence of the ship's Commanding officer.

Soon enough, a meeting was called.  Mas made his way to the briefing room.

It felt strange to enter a room containing a Captain and Commander.  It felt strange to be someone who should be sitting in a room with them.

He noticed Ora standing 'at attention' in the back.  Or was that just the way she stood?  It seemed to his mind that she was perpetually at military attention.  Stiffer than Verlok, even.  Both she and Verlok had been his contemporaries at the Academy, having enrolled at about the same time he had.  Both were sharp, and easily resided in the top ten-percent of students graduating from New Bajor.

At least if the Amalthea didn't have the most experienced officers, she had the best ones available.

He nodded to Ora and took a seat, removing his PADD from a belt-pouch and setting it on the table in front of him.

Captain Tess t'Lhoell
[USS Amalthea - Deck 4 - Bridge][/size]

As the ship glided through the Oort cloud, Tess opened a ship-wide channel. To begin their mission, she wanted to say a few words to her young crew.

[Enroute to Atros] (leaving the Oort cloud)

Tess nodded at Rayek. "Yes, please go ahead and prepare the briefing. We have to introduce the crew to the Atrosians and our history with them. In one hour is perfectly fine." It would give her time to drop by Fvienn, who was about 5 months old by now. Time went by so quickly.

Tess' impromptu speech (at least Rayek thought it was impromptu...since she hadn't been reciting it over and over earlier in their quarters prior) was very apt for the situation and as it should be, very inspiring.

He nodded his approval.  While he disliked the design of this bridge with the large space between his and Tess' seats, it was perhaps a fortunate feature, otherwise he'd have been tempted to reach out for her hand to hold in support.  Instead, his nod alone would have to suffice.

Later, at Tess' given permission, Rayek stood and crossed the Bridge to the turbolift and took it down a deck to head to the Conference room where Rayek planned to have the Department Heads meet.   He contacted them in a group to inform them of the time of the meeting.

=/\= "Cmdr tr'Lhoell to all ship Department Heads. A Briefing meeting is scheduled in one hour's time to discuss the current mission.  Either you or your alternate must attend.  tr'Lhoell out" =/\=

First thing Rayek did upon leaving the bridge was to contact Hospitality Services to ‘book’ the Conference room with full amenities including food and drink. Not a necessity for what was likely to be a short meeting but hoped that Tess might feel inclined to eat something if it was placed in of her, since he noted that morning she had barely touch her breakfast. He also arranged for an immediate activation of the room’s cleaning bot. It seemed like a rather minor and unimportant step except that the bots were designed to scan along its path for hazards and recording devices and report them to Security.

Rayek already knew the ship was clear by Starfleet standards as of this morning’s report. Yet by calling for a cleaning now, Rayek could observe what places the bot’s programmed route and routine missed and then scan in detail those areas for anything malicious with his personal scanner which was based on a Romulan design.

Finding nothing, Rayek envisioned what other things a Thinker agent might employ as a desperate measure to keep the Amalthea from her purpose. Then recalibrated his scanner to connect to the ship’s internal sensors and after assuring that the underlying security program had not been tampered with ran an additional ship wide scan for the presence of poisons and explosives. That too came up negative.

Satisfied for now, Rayek sat at the table and looked over the material that Tess was likely to bring up and prepared a few appropriate visual and suggested briefing points to bring up and forwarded these to Tess for to use if she wished.

Checking the time, it was 15 minutes til the meeting, not really enough time to stop by their quarters to check in on Fvienn in person but he did so by comm, calling Phara to see how his son was doing and was pleased to hear that Tess was there.

He declined Phara’s offer to pass the comm to his wife not wishing to disturb Tess with work at that moment. Tess, as Captain, would see everything in readiness when she read his message a little later.

With Tess, at their quarters, Rayek felt obligated to return the bridge proper and remained there until the just before the meeting began.  Reading through the responses he received back from his call regarding the meeting as he sat as duty officer on the Bridge, the Romulan noted that Fabiano was declining the meeting and had assigned it to his alternate.   Rayek paused at this, and then glanced over towards Tactical where Ensign Loxis sat.   He noted that the Bolian officer had already sent him the requested materials he'd asked for earlier.  He skimmed through it a moment before coming to his decision.

"Ensign Loxis, you will attend all this and all Mission Briefs as the Sec/Tac DH representative as I'll be focused on my role a XO.  Afterwards, I expect you to report back to me with any departmental concerns that will need to be considered.   We will then discuss these concerns together at a subsequent meeting that you will schedule between you and I ."

After that it was just a matter of waiting on the Bridge for the meeting time to arrive.  Rayek, watching the entrance to the Conference room on his PADD via the security feeds, kept track of those who arrived and waited for as long as possible for the others still expected before making his way down, passing conn of the ship to one of the inexperienced ensigns left him feeling uncomfortable.

He stepped into the meeting at the last minute, pausing a moment just inside the door way to look over the room.  The Romulan noted the lack of any officer above the rank of Ensign other than Tess, himself and the sour-looking Padrini.  And it was a stark reminder of challenges they had in store for them. Rayek then walked over to the Captain's right-hand side and took his seat.

"Captain, we are ready to begin."
